विंध्याद्रिमिव तं स्कंदो गृहीत्वा तं व्यताडयत् ३२.
Skanda seized him as if he were Mount Vindhya and struck him.
मेने च दुर्जयं दैत्यस्तदा षड्वदनं रणे ३२.
Then the demon thought the six-faced one to be invincible in battle.
तं भीतमिव चालक्ष्य दैत्यवीराश्च कोटिशः ३२.
Seeing him as if frightened, countless demon warriors gathered.
क्रुद्धस्तेषु ततः स्कंदः शक्तिं घोरामथाददे ३२.
Then Skanda, enraged at them, took up his terrible spear.
उल्काजालं महाघोरं पपात वसुधातले ३२.
A terrifying shower of meteors fell upon the earth.
ततः कोट्यो विनिष्पेतुः शक्तीनां भर्तर्षभ ३२.
Then, O best of warriors, millions of spears burst forth.
अष्टौ पद्मानि दैत्वानां दशकोटिशतानि च ३२.
Eight lotus formations of demons, and ten hundred million groups as well.
ह्रंदोदरं च दैत्येंद्रं निखर्वैर्दशभिर्वृतम् ३२.
Hrandodara, the lord of demons, surrounded by ten fierce adversaries.
कुमारानुचराः पार्थ पूरयंतो दिशो दश ३२.
The attendants of Kumara, O Partha, filled the ten directions.
पताकयावधूताश्च हताः केचित्सहस्रशः ३२.
Some, struck down by fluttering banners, were slain by the thousands.
केचिन्मयूरपक्षाभ्यां चरणाभ्यां च सूदिताः ३२.
Some were killed by peacock feathers and by feet.
पार्षदैर्मातृभिः सार्धं पद्मशो निहताः परे ३२.
Others were slain in groups by the companions together with the Mothers.
अभाग्यैरिव लोकेषु तारकः स्कंदमाययौ ३२.
As if unfortunate among beings, Taraka approached Skanda.
तया मयूरमाजघ्ने मयूरो विमुखोऽभवत् ३२.
With that, he struck the peacock; the peacock turned away.
देवसेनापते शीघ्रं शक्तिं मुंच महासुरे ३२.
O commander of the divine army, quickly hurl your spear at the great demon.
त्वयैव रुद्रभक्तोऽयं जनार्दन ममेरितम् ३२.
This one is devoted to Rudra, O Janardana, and has been sent by me.
नारुद्रः पूजयेद्रुद्रं भक्तरूपस्य यो हरः ३२.
Rudra does not worship Rudra; Hara is in the form of a devotee.
तिरस्कृता विप्रलब्धाः शप्ताः क्षिप्ताः प्रपीडिताः ३२.
They have been disregarded, deceived, cursed, cast away, and oppressed.
एष चेद्धंति तद्भद्रं हन्यतामेष मां रणे ३२.
If he kills, let it be auspicious; let him slay me in battle.
नैतत्तवोचितं स्कंद रुद्रभक्तो यथा श्रृणु ३२.
This is not proper for you, Skanda, as a devotee of Rudra; listen.
एका जीवात्मिका तत्र प्रत्यक्षा च तथापरा ३२.
There is one living soul there, manifest and another unmanifest.
भक्तो रुद्रो कृपावांश्च जंतुष्वेव हरव्रतः ३२.
Rudra is a compassionate devotee, following the vow of Hara among creatures.
जहि नैवात्र पश्यामि दोषं कंचन ते प्रभो ३२.
Strike! For, O Lord, I do not see any fault in you here.
हंतुं न कुरुते बुद्धिं रुद्रभक्त इति स्मरन् ३२.
Remembering that he is a devotee of Rudra, he does not form the intention to kill.
प्राह चैवं सुदुर्बुद्धे हन्मि त्वां पश्य मे बलम् हत्वा त्वामद्य सर्वांस्तांश्छेत्स्ये पश्याद्य मे बलम्॥ ३२.
Then he said to that most foolish one: 'I will kill you—behold my strength! Having slain you today, I will destroy all of them; see my power today!'
दैत्येंद्र तव चास्माभिः किमहो श्रृणु सत्यताम्॥ ३२.
O lord of the Daityas, hear now from us what truly is to be done.
रथे य एष शर्वोऽयं हतेऽस्मिन्सकलं हतम् ३२.
He who is on that chariot is Śarva; if he is slain, all is slain.
अभिसृत्य स जग्राह रुद्रस्य रथकूबरम् ३२.
Rushing forward, he seized the yoke of Rudra’s chariot.
रेसतू रोदसी तूर्णं मुमुहुश्च महर्षयः ३२.
The heavens and the earth resounded swiftly, and the great sages were bewildered.
आसीच्च निश्चितं तेषां जितमस्माभिरित्युत ३२.
It was then certain among them: 'We have been conquered.'
