Having instructed me, you sent me to the lord of the Asuras for the proper task.
In the palace, among thousands of women, I spoke in the midst.
O Danava, the sin acquired from the destruction of the world is yours.
Depart quickly, O most wicked one; if you do not depart, you shall be expelled.
Hearing such harsh words, he became angry, surrounded by a throng of women.
Disturbed, he reported the incident there to Kumara.
Having found no refuge, Indra ought not speak of this here.
Thinking thus, he rose and ascended to the window.
He saw the army of the gods filling both heaven and earth.
With wondrous flying palaces, resounding with the songs of Kinnaras.
Seeing that army, seemingly unshakable, he pondered at that moment.
Absorbed in such thoughts, the demon heard harsh words.
Victory to Kumara, lord of hosts, whose radiant arms shine like the circle of the sun, who makes the lotus-groves of cities and forests bloom, who is the moon to the lilies of the gods’ army, who is the submarine fire to the great ocean of the demon race, whose peacock’s sweet cry shatters the peaks of the crowns of the demon lords, whose lotus feet are adorned with rays that dispel the darkness of anxiety in the sky of yogis’ hearts, who is Skanda, child of seven nights, who burns away the sorrow of the worlds—victory!
Salutations, salutations to you, O charming one; salutations to you, remover of the fears of the good.
Hearing this praise, resounding from the bards of the gods, the demon—
Hearing it, his whole body moist, the king spoke to the doorkeeper.
Then, by the king’s command, they approached Kalanemi.
From whom no news of the enemy arises, I do not consider him a true minister; he who counsels the king’s welfare is called a minister.
Who knows the intentions of the gods or the demons? Such is our thought.
Do not despair, great king; we shall conquer the gods.
All this is easily accomplished; let the war drum be struck firmly.
The drum, beaten fiercely, made the world tremble.
From the rivers, from the oceans, from the netherworlds, and even from the sky—
With ten hundred trillion times a hundred quadrillion—
In a land four yojanas wide, filled with many wonders—
Meanwhile, O Pārtha, the attendants of Skanda, enraged—
Then the earth goddess trembled, along with her forests and groves—
The world became shrouded in darkness, and the sky was filled with vultures—
O Pārtha, the mighty force led by Kālanemi was seen—
They charged in battle against the gods and the blessed Śaṅkara—
