संस्काररहितं जन्म यतश्च पशुवत्स्मृतम् २९.
A birth without sacraments is considered like that of an animal.
ततो मुनिस्तस्य चक्रे जातकर्मादिकाः क्रियाः २९.
Therefore, the sage performed for him the rites beginning with birth-ceremony.
ततस्तं वह्निरभ्यागाद्ददर्श च सुतं गुहम् २९.
Then Agni approached him and saw his son Guha.
एकग्रीवं चैककायं कुमारं स व्यलोकयत् २९.
He beheld the boy with one neck and one body.
दृतीयायां शिशुर्जातश्चतुर्थ्यां पूर्ण एवच २९.
On the second day, the child was born, and by the fourth day, he was fully grown.
ततस्तं पावकः पार्थ आलिलिंग चुचुंब च २९.
Then, O Pārtha, Agni embraced him and kissed him.
स च शक्तिं समादाय नमस्कृत्य च पावकम् २९.
He took up his spear, bowed to Agni,
व्यनदद्भैरवं नादं त्रास यन्सासुरं जगत् २९.
and let out a terrifying roar that struck fear into the world of asuras.
बिभेद तरसा शक्त्या शतयोजनविस्तृतम् २९.
With force, he struck with his spear, shattering an expanse a hundred yojanas wide.
चूर्णीकृता राक्षसास्ते सततं धर्मशत्रवः २९.
Those rakshasas, ever enemies of dharma, were utterly pulverized.
भीताश्च पर्वताः सर्वे चुक्रुशुः प्रलयाद्यथा २९.
All the mountains, terrified, cried out as if at the time of dissolution.
एवं श्रुत्वा ततो देवा वासवं सह तेऽब्रुवन् २९.
Hearing this, the gods then spoke together to Vāsava.
स संक्रुद्धः क्षणाद्विश्वं संहरिष्यति वासव २९.
"If he becomes enraged, O Vāsava, he will destroy the universe in a moment."
तच्च त्राणं सदा कार्यं प्राणैः कंठगतैरपि २९.
"Therefore, protection must always be given, even if life itself is at the throat."
धिक्ततो जन्म वीराणां श्लाघ्यं हि मरणं क्षणात् २९.
"Shame on the birth of heroes—glorious is death in an instant."
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा देवैः सार्धं तमभ्ययात् २९.
Thus addressed, he replied, 'So be it,' and went with the gods to him.
उग्रं तच्च महावेगं देवानीकं दुरासदम् २९.
That fierce and mighty army of the gods was unapproachable.
तस्य नादेन महता समुद्धूतोदधिप्रभम् २९.
By his great roar, it shone like the ocean stirred up.
जिघांसूनुपसंप्राप्तान्देवान्दृष्ट्वा स पावकिः २९.
Seeing the gods approaching with intent to kill, the son of Agni—
अदहद्देवसैन्यानि चेष्ट मानानि भूतले २९.
burned up the armies of the gods and their activities on the earth.
प्रच्युताः सहसा भांति दिवस्तारागणा इव २९.
They were scattered at once, shining like the stars in the daytime.
देवा वज्रधरं प्रोचुस्त्यज वज्रं शतक्रतो २९.
The gods said to the wielder of the thunderbolt, 'O Śatakratu, cast aside the thunderbolt!'
तद्विसृष्टं जघानाशु पार्श्व स्कंदस्य दक्षिणम् २९.
That which was released struck swiftly the right side of Skanda.
वज्रप्रहारात्स्कंदस्य संजातः पुरुषोऽपरः २९.
From the blow of the thunderbolt, another man was born from Skanda.
शाख इत्यभिविख्यातः सोपि व्यनददद्भुतम् २९.
He became known as Śākha, and he too uttered a wondrous cry.
तत्रापि तादृशो जज्ञे नैगमेय इति श्रुतः २९.
There also, one of similar nature was born, called Naigameya, as heard.
तदेंद्रो वज्रमुत्सृज्य प्रांजलिः शरणं ययौ २९.
Then Indra, abandoning the thunderbolt, approached with joined palms for refuge.
ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रभिदशा वादित्राण्यभ्यवादयन् २९.
Then, delighted, the gods played instruments and sounded drums.
या हरं ति शिशूञ्जातान्गर्भस्थांश्चैव दारुणाः २९.
Those fierce mothers who had given birth to Hara and the infants still in the womb,
आया पलाला मित्रा च सप्तैताः शिशुमातरः २९.
Āyā, Palālā, Mitrā—these seven are the mothers of the child.
