पत्नीसरूपतां कृत्वा कामयामास पावकम् २९.
Assuming the likeness of his wife, she desired the fire.
तस्यास्तपःप्रभावेण भर्तुः शुश्रूषणेन च २९.
By the power of her austerity and by serving her husband,
कुंडेऽस्मिंश्चैत्रबहुले प्रतिपद्येव स्वाहया २९.
In this vessel, on the first day of the bright fortnight of Caitra, with the invocation 'svāhā',
आः पापं कृतमित्येव देहन्यासेऽकरोन्मतिम् २९.
Ah, a sinful act has been committed—thus she resolved to abandon her body.
भाव्यमेतच्च भाव्यर्थात्को हि पावक मुच्यते २९.
This too shall happen, for what is destined must occur; who indeed is freed from the fire?
कृतं तच्चेतसा तेन त्वामजीर्णं प्रवेक्ष्यति २९.
That which was done in his mind, he will enter you undigested.
शोकं च त्यज नैतास्ताः स्वाहै वेयं तव प्रिया ततो वह्निस्तत्र गत्वा ददृशे तनयं प्रभुम्॥ २९.
Abandon sorrow; these are not yours. 'Svāhā' is your beloved. Then Agni went there and saw his son, the lord.
कस्मात्स्वाहा करोद्रूपं षण्णां तासां महामुने॥ २९.
Why did Svāhā assume the form of six of them, O great sage?
यत्ता भर्तृपराः साध्व्यस्तपस्विन्योग्निसंनिभाः भर्तृभक्त्या जगद्दग्धुं यतः शक्ताश्च ता मुने॥ २९.
Those virtuous wives, devoted to their husbands, ascetic and radiant like fire, O sage, by their devotion to their husbands, are capable of burning the world.
सत्यमेतत्कुरुश्रेष्ठ श्रृणु तच्चापि कारणम् २९.
This is true, O best of Kurus; listen also to the reason for it.
यत्र तद्वह्निना क्षिप्तं रुद्रतेजः सकृत्पुरा २९.
Once, where the energy of Rudra was cast into the fire,
ततस्ता विह्वलीभूतास्तेजसा तेन मोहिताः २९.
Then, overwhelmed by that brilliance, they became bewildered.
एतदंतमालोक्य चिकीर्षंती मनीषितम् २९.
Seeing this outcome, desiring to accomplish their intent,
चिक्रीड वह्निजायापि यथा ते कथितं मया॥ २९.
The wife of the fire-god also played as I have told you.
उपकारमिमं ताभिः स्मरंतीभिश्च भारत २९.
Remembering this favor, O Bhārata, by those women,
ततः सप्तर्षयो ज्ञात्वा ज्ञानेनासुचितां गताः २९.
Then the seven sages, knowing this, attained a state of impurity through knowledge.
विश्वामित्रस्तु भगवान्कुमारं शरणं गतः २९.
The venerable Viśvāmitra sought refuge in Kumāra.
अष्टोत्तरशतं नाम्नां श्रृणु त्वं तानि फाल्गुन २९.
Hear now, O Phālguna, the one hundred and eight names.
त्वं ब्रह्मवादी त्वं ब्रह्मा ब्राह्मणवत्सलः २९.
You are the speaker of Brahman, you are Brahmā, you are affectionate to Brahmins.
त्वं परं परमं तेजो मंगलानां च मंगलम् २९.
You are the supreme, the highest radiance, the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious.
त्वं सावित्रीमयो देव सर्वत्रैवापराजितः २९.
You are composed of Sāvitrī, O god, everywhere unconquered.
माली मौली पताकी च जटी मुंडी शिखंड्यपि २९.
Mālī, Maulī, Patākī, Jaṭī, Muṇḍī, and also Śikhaṇḍī.
गवांपुत्रः सुरारिघ्नः संभवो भवभावनः २९.
Son of cows, destroyer of enemies of the gods, origin, awakener of existence.
द्वादशो भूर्भुवो भावी भुवः पुत्रो नमस्कृतः २९.
Twelfth, Bhūrbhuvaḥ Bhāvī, son of Bhuvaḥ, revered.
त्वं भर्ता सर्वभूतात्मा त्वं त्राता त्वं सुखावहः २९.
You are the lord, the soul of all beings; you are the protector; you are the bringer of happiness.
हेमगर्भो महागर्भो जयश्च विजयेश्वरः २९.
Golden womb, great womb, victorious, and lord of victory.
महासेनो महातेज वीरसेनश्च भूपतिः २९.
Mahāsena, of great splendor, and Vīrasena, the lord of the earth.
शौरिर्यदुर्महातेजा वीर्यवान्सत्यविक्रमः २९.
Śauri, Yadu, of immense brilliance, powerful, and truly valiant.
कृतज्ञो वरदः सत्यः शरण्यः साधुवत्सलः २९.
Grateful, bestower of boons, truthful, a refuge, and affectionate to the virtuous.
पिप्पली शीघ्रगो रौद्री गांगेयो रिपुदारणः २९.
Pippalī, swift-goer, fierce, son of Gaṅgā, destroyer of enemies.
