There, on that splendid great peak adorned with many wonders,
The daughter of the mountain performed austerities, protected by her son.
In winter, she remained on the bare ground, fasting, practicing penance.
Knowing that the mountain’s daughter had departed, he remembered his enmity with her father.
When the demon Andhaka, the enemy of the gods, was defeated by the Lord of the Mountain,
Then Brahmā, pleased by his austerities, came to him and spoke.
The demon said to Brahmā: 'I choose freedom from death.' Brahmā replied:
Even so, O lord of demons, death is inevitable for embodied beings.
When my form changes, O Lotus-born, let death come to me.
Thus addressed, the Lotus-born, being pleased, replied, 'So be it.'
Then he went to the abode of the destroyer of Tripura.
Deceiving him, the leader, who bore a serpent’s body,
Abandoning the form of a serpent, the great demon then assumed another shape.
By his magic, he took on a form that was unfathomable and captivating.
The demon made his teeth within his mouth as hard as diamonds.
Thus taking the form of Umā, the demon stood before Hara.
Thinking himself to be the mountain’s daughter in every limb,
O best-complexioned one, knowing your prideful intent, you have come here.
You, who have come to me pleased, are indeed rightly disposed towards me in this way.
I have set out to undertake austerities, driven by your words, O wind-like one.
Thus addressed, Śaṃkara became somewhat doubtful and reflected.
She who had not attained her desire has now attained it—what is this doubt of mine?
But on her left side, he did not see the lotus mark on her lap.
Realizing her to be a demoness in disguise, he smiled a little.
That demon, overcome with grief, began to wail with terrifying cries.
When he was slain by the swift Marut, the mountain deity—
Hearing from Vāyu’s mouth, the goddess’s eyes became blood-red with anger.
Because you abandoned me, your mother, overwhelmed with affection—
Therefore, your words are harsh, rough, dull, and devoid of heart.
Thus, after being cursed by the daughter of the mountain, in turn—
