Bowing to all beings, I seek what is difficult to obtain.
When the little hero went off to play, then the goddess Parvati—
Then, Maheshvara, with his arm cast around the neck of the daughter of the mountain—
That Sharva, whose body is fair, shone especially with the moon.
On my body, O slender-waisted one, your white radiance gleams.
As the dark night is suffused with the moon’s rays, so is my form.
Thus addressed by Sharva, Girija released his neck.
Every person is disregarded by others because of their own actions.
With austerities and illustrious deeds, I have sought you.
I am not crooked, Sharva, nor am I harsh, O bearer of the matted locks.
I do not destroy the eyes; you, O Bhava, are the destroyer of the eye.
You create the trident on your head, reproaching me for faults that are your own.
I will go, abandoning you, to the mountain for austerity.
Hearing her words, sharp with the edge of anger, Bhava—
O Daughter of the Mountain, you do not know the truth; I am not one who finds fault with you.
This wavering is because your mind is pure, O Girijā, and for that I am fond of you.
Words from people like us, O dark-limbed one, sometimes turn out otherwise.
I will speak playfully; give up your anger, O one with a lovely smile.
Even when insulted by someone lowly, I do not lose my composure.
Thus, with many flattering and pleasing words, the god tried to console her.
Then, holding her fast, he threw himself at her feet with his hand.
As she walked away in anger, the destroyer of cities spoke again.
My mind is troubled by those peaks of Himāchala, wreathed in clouds.
The harshness and hardness in you has come in many ways from those forests.
All of this has passed to you, O goddess, from Himāchala.
With lips trembling in anger, her mouth smoky, her teeth bared.
Indeed, all of this has come to you as well from wicked association.
From the moon you have taken impurity of heart, and from the bull, difficulty in understanding.
You have lived in cremation grounds; you have no shame because of your nakedness.
As Girijā was going, she saw her friend, her mother's mighty attendant.
