There were those with strange vehicles, and others bearing various weapons.
Seeing them, Pārvatī asked, 'What are their numbers and names?'
O Goddess, these are countless, and their names too are innumerable.
In places of siddhas, on roads, in ruined gardens, and in houses,
These, joyful, enter and roam, delighting in various foods; some are intoxicated eaters of all things, while others do not eat at all.
They delight in songs, dances, offerings, and the sounds of various instruments.
This one, whose face is smeared with red pigment and ointment,
Hearing and hearing your praises sung by the gaṇas, O Lord, of your great virtues,
He repeatedly, in agitation, says only 'Sadāśiva! Śiva!'
I wish to know who this gaṇa of yours is, and what is his name, O Śrī Śaṃkara.
He is called Pratīhāra, the bearer of many wondrous qualities, O Ambikā.
When will I obtain such a son, a giver of joy? said Devī. Śarva spoke:
Thus addressed, Vijayā said, 'Quickly bring Vīraka.'
'Come, Vīraka, the goddess Girijā, the auspicious one, is pleased with you.'
Thus spoken to, filled with excitement, he wiped his face with his hand.
Seeing him, Girijā spoke with words of sweet sound.
Thus addressed, he bowed down to the goddess in full prostration and stood before her.
She kissed him on the forehead and gently wiped his limbs.
Having thus resolved, Uma fondled her son for a while.
Then, the son of Parvati played among the hosts of attendants.
Bowing to all beings, I seek what is difficult to obtain.
When the little hero went off to play, then the goddess Parvati—
Then, Maheshvara, with his arm cast around the neck of the daughter of the mountain—
That Sharva, whose body is fair, shone especially with the moon.
On my body, O slender-waisted one, your white radiance gleams.
As the dark night is suffused with the moon’s rays, so is my form.
Thus addressed by Sharva, Girija released his neck.
Every person is disregarded by others because of their own actions.
With austerities and illustrious deeds, I have sought you.
I am not crooked, Sharva, nor am I harsh, O bearer of the matted locks.
