पुत्रेत्युवाच तं देवी ततः संहृष्टमानसा २७.
The Goddess, with a delighted heart, said to him, 'Son!'
पुत्रस्तवायं गिरिजे श्रृणु यादृग्भविष्यति २७.
'This son is yours, O Girijā; listen to what he will be like.'
यथाहं तादृशश्चासौ पुत्रस्ते भविता गुणैः २७.
'As I am, so too will your son be, endowed with virtues.'
तेषामामरणांतानि विघ्नान्येष करिष्यति २७.
'He will cause obstacles that end in death for them.'
विघ्निता विघ्नराजेन ते यास्यंति महत्तमः २७.
'Those who are obstructed by the Lord of Obstacles will attain the highest state.'
पुत्रस्य तव विघ्नेन समूलं तस्य नश्यति २७.
'By the obstacle of your son, their root will be destroyed.'
रौद्रसाहसिका ये च तेषां विघ्नं करिष्यति २७.
'He will create obstacles for those who are fierce and violent.'
कृपालवो गतक्रोधास्तेषां विघ्नं हरिष्यति २७.
'He will remove obstacles for those who are compassionate and free from anger.'
सविघ्नानि भिवष्यंति पूजयास्य विना शुभे २७.
'Without worshipping him, O auspicious one, obstacles will surely arise.'
ततो बृहत्तनुः सोऽभूत्तेजसा द्योतयन्दिशः यावत्तार कहंता वो भवेत्तावदयं प्रभुः॥ २७.
Then he became vast in form, his brilliance illuminating the directions; until the slayer of Tāraka is born, this Lord will remain.
ततो विघ्नपतिर्देवैः संस्तुतः प्रमतार्तिहा २७.
Then the Lord of Obstacles, praised by the gods, destroyed the suffering of the attendants.
पार्वती च पुनर्देवी पुत्रत्वे परिकल्प्य च २७.
And again the goddess Parvati, considering him as her son,
सप्तर्षीनथ चाहूय संस्कारमंगलं तरोः २७.
Summoned the seven sages and performed auspicious rites for the child.
त्वयैव दर्शिते मार्गे मर्यादां कर्तुमर्हसि २७.
Since you have shown the path, you ought to establish the proper conduct.
यो वै निरुदके ग्रामे कूपं कारयते बुधः २७.
Whoever, in a village without water, wisely constructs a well,
दशकूपसमावापी दशवापी समं सरः २७.
A pond equals ten wells, a lake equals ten ponds.
दशक्रतुसमः पुत्रो दशपुत्रसमो द्रुमः॥ २७.
A son equals ten sacrifices, a tree equals ten sons.
एषैव मम मर्यादा नियता लोकभाविनी २७.
This is my established rule, destined for the world.
ततः कदाचिद्भगवानुमया सह मंदरे २७.
Then, once, the Blessed One, together with me, on Mandara,
प्रकीर्णकुसुमामोदमहालिकुलकूजिते २७.
Where flowers were scattered, fragrant, and bees were humming,
क्रीडामयूरैर्हसैश्च श्रुतैश्चैवाभिनादिते २७.
Where playful peacocks and laughter resounded, and delightful sounds were heard,
तत्र पुण्यकथाभिश्च क्रीडतो रुभयोस्तयोः २७.
There, with stories of virtue, the two played together.
तं श्रुत्वा कौतुकाद्देवी किमेतदिति शंकरम् २७.
Hearing this, the goddess, out of curiosity, asked Shankara, 'What is this?'
तामाह देवीं गिरिशो दृष्टपूर्वास्तु ते त्वया २७.
The Lord of the Mountain replied to the goddess, 'You have seen them before.'
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण क्लेशेन क्षेत्रसाधनैः २७.
Through asceticism, celibacy, hardship, and cultivation of the field,
मत्समीपमनुप्राप्ता मम लोकं वरानने २७.
They have reached my presence, O beautiful-faced one, and attained my world.
विनैतान्नैव मे प्रीतिर्नैभिर्विरहितो रमे २७.
Without them, I have no delight; without them, I do not rejoice.
इत्युक्ता विस्मिता देवी ददृशे तान्गवाक्षके २७.
Thus addressed, the goddess, astonished, saw them at the window.
केचित्कृशा ह्रस्वदीर्घाः केचित्स्थूलमहोदराः २७.
Some were thin, short or tall; some had large bodies or great bellies.
व्याघ्रचर्मपरीधाना नग्ना ज्वालामुखाः परे २७.
Some wore tiger skins, others were naked, and some had faces like blazing flames.
