अज्ञातकुलतां तस्य पृछ्यतामयमेव च २६.
His unknown lineage was questioned, and this alone was asked.
स्वगोत्रं यदि न ब्रूते न देया भगिनी मम २६.
'If he does not declare his own clan, my sister shall not be given.'
निवृत्तश्च क्षणाद्भूयः किं वक्ष्यति हरस्त्विति २६.
He withdrew for a moment, wondering what Shiva would say.
लज्जाजडः स्मितं चक्रे ततः पार्थ स वै हरः २६.
Shiva, bashful and hesitant, then smiled, O Partha.
हरिः प्राह महेशानं बिभ्यदावेद्मयहं तव २६.
Hari said to Maheśāna, 'I am afraid, O Lord, and I have come to you.'
आत्मपुत्राय ते शंभो आत्मदौहित्रकाय ते २६.
For your own son, O Śambhu, and for your own daughter's son as well,
देवोऽप्युदाहरेद्वुद्धिं सर्वेभ्योऽप्यधिकां वराम् २६.
Even the gods would declare his wisdom to be superior to all others.
आत्मानं चापि देवाय प्रददौ सोदकं नगः २६.
The mountain also gave himself, with water, to the god.
दाता महीभृतां नाथो होता देवश्चतुर्मुखः २६.
The giver was the lord of mountains; the officiating priest was the four-faced god.
ततः स्तुवत्सु मुनिषु पुष्पवर्षे महत्यपि २६.
Then, as the sages praised, there was a great shower of flowers.
देवो देवीं समालोक्य सलज्जां हिमशैलजाम् २६.
The god, seeing the goddess—daughter of the snowy mountain—standing shy,
तत्र ब्रह्मादिमुनयो देवीमद्भुतरूपिणीम् २६.
There, Brahmā and the foremost sages beheld the goddess in her wondrous form.
मा मुह्याम पार्वतीं च यथा नारदपर्वतौ २६.
Let us not be bewildered by Pārvatī, as Nārada and Parvata once were.
ततो देवैश्च मुनिभिः संस्तुतः परमेश्वरः २६.
Then, praised by the gods and sages, the Supreme Lord—
वेधाः श्रुतीरितैर्मं त्रैर्मूर्तिमद्भिरुपस्थितैः २६.
The Creator, attended by those of triple form, approached with words from the Vedas.
लाजाहोम उमाभ्राता प्राह तं सस्मितं हरिः २६.
At the offering of parched grain, Umā's brother, smiling, spoke to Hari.
सावधानेन रक्ष्याणि भूषणानि त्वया हर २६.
'You must carefully protect these ornaments, O Hara,' he said.
किंचित्प्रार्थय दास्यामि प्राह विष्णुस्ततो वरम् २६.
Then Viṣṇu said, 'Ask for something; I will grant you a boon.'
ददतुः सृष्टिसंरक्षां ब्रह्मणे दक्षिणामुभौ २६.
Both gave to Brahmā the fee for the protection and creation of the world.
भृग्वादीनां ततो दत्त्वा श्रुतिरक्षणदक्षिणाम् २६.
Then, having given to Bhṛgu and others the fee for the protection of the Vedas,
महोत्सवैरनेकैश्च विस्मयं समपद्यत २६.
Through many great celebrations, wonder arose.
सरस्वत्या च पितरौ देव्याश्चाऽऽश्वास्य दुःखितौ २६.
And Sarasvatī comforted the grieving parents of the goddess.
जगाम मंदरगिरिं गिरिणा यानुगोर्चितः॥ २६.
He went to Mount Mandara, accompanied by the mountain.
ततो गते भगवति नीललोहिते सहोमया गिरिममलं हि भूधरः २६.
Then, when the Lord Nīlalohita had departed with Umā, the pure mountain became the support.
इमं विवाहं गिरिराजपुत्र्याः श्रृणोति चाध्येति च यो नरः शुचिः २६.
Whoever, being pure, hears and recites this marriage of the daughter of the Mountain King—
ततो निरुपमं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नमयं शुभम् २७.
Then there appeared an incomparable, divine, auspicious palace made of all precious gems.
तत्रासौ मंदरगिरौ सह देव्या भगाक्षहा २७.
There, on Mount Mandara, the Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eye, stayed with the Goddess.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवास्तारकेणातिपीडिताः २७.
Meanwhile, the gods were greatly afflicted by Tāraka.
आसाद्य ते भवं देवं तुष्टुबुर्बहुधा स्तवैः २७.
Approaching Lord Bhava, they praised him in many ways with hymns.
उद्वर्तनमलेनाथ नरं चक्रे गजाननम् २७.
Then, from the dirt of his body, he created Gajānana, the elephant-faced one.
