आजग्मुस्त्वरया युक्ता ददुस्तस्मै करं च ताः २५.
They hurriedly came and offered her their hands.
नाहं स्पृशाम्यसंसिद्धां म्रिये वा नानृतं त्विदम् २५.
I do not touch what is impure; I would rather die than utter falsehood.
सव्यं करं ददावस्य तं चासौ नाभ्यनन्दत २५.
She offered her left hand, but he did not accept it.
सदोषेण कृतं यच्च तदादद्यान्न कर्हिचित् २५.
What is done with fault should never be taken.
इत्युक्ता पार्वती प्राह नाहं दत्तं च दक्षिणम् २५.
Thus addressed, Pārvatī replied: I have not given my right hand.
दक्षिणं मे करं देवो ग्रहीता भव एव च २५.
The god Bhava alone will take my right hand.
यद्येवमवलेपस्ते गमनं केन वार्यते २५.
If this is your pride, what prevents you from departing?
रुद्रस्यापि वयं मान्याः कीदृशं ते तपो वद २५.
Even to Rudra we are honored; tell us, what is your austerity like?
अवजा नासि विप्रांस्त्वं तच्छीघ्रं व्रज दर्शनात् २५.
You do not respect the brāhmaṇas; quickly go away from our sight.
ततो विचार्य बहुधा इति चेति च सा शुभा २५.
Then, considering in many ways, that auspicious one thought thus.
ततः सा दक्षिणं दत्त्वा करं तं प्रोज्जहार च एतत्सन्दर्शनार्थाय तथा चक्रे भवोद्भवः॥ २५.
Then she gave her right hand and withdrew it; for the sake of this demonstration, Bhava's offspring acted thus.
प्रोद्धृत्य च ततः स्नात्वा बद्ध्व योगासनं स्थिता॥ २५.
After being lifted out, she bathed and, binding the yogic seat, remained there.
ब्रह्मचारी ततः प्राह प्रहसन्किमिदं शुभे २५.
Then the celibate youth laughed and said, 'What is this, O auspicious one?'
देवी प्राह ज्वालयिष्ये शरीरं योगवह्निना २५.
The goddess replied, 'I will burn my body with the fire of yoga.'
ब्रह्मचारी ततः प्राह काश्चिद्ब्राह्मणकाम्यया २५.
Then the celibate youth said, 'Some act out of desire for a Brahmin.'
नोपहन्यां कदाचिद्वि साधुभिर्विप्रकामना २५.
But I would never harm, even in thought, those who are virtuous, out of desire for a Brahmin.
देवी प्राह ब्रूहि विप्र मुहूर्तं संस्थिता त्वहम् २५.
The goddess said, 'Speak, O Brahmin, I am standing here for a moment.'
किमर्थमिति रम्भोरु नवे वयसि दुश्चरम् २५.
'For what reason, O slender-thighed one, do you undertake such a difficult act in your youth?'
दुर्लभं प्राप्य मानुष्यं गिरिराजगृहेऽधुना २५.
'Having now attained the rare human birth in the house of the mountain king—'
अतीव दूये वीक्ष्य त्वां सुकुमारतराकृतिम् २५.
'I am greatly pained to see you, so delicate in form.'
इदं चान्यत्त्व शुभे शिरसो रोगदं मम २५.
'And, O auspicious one, there is another thing: I have a disease of the head.'
वामः कामो मनुष्येषु सत्यमेतद्वचो यतः २५.
'Desire is fickle among humans; this statement is indeed true.'
अविज्ञातान्वयो नग्नः शूली भूतगणाधिपः २५.
'His lineage is unknown, he is naked, carries a trident, and is the lord of the hosts of spirits.'
गजाजिनो द्विजिह्वाद्यलंकृतांगो जटाधरः २५.
'He wears an elephant hide, is adorned with serpents, and bears matted hair.'
गुणा ये कुलशीलाद्य वराणामुदिता बुधैः २५.
'The virtues of noble families, character, and so on, praised by the wise—'
शोचनीयतमा पूर्वमासीत्पार्वति कौमुदी २५.
'Formerly, O Pārvatī, you were most pitiable, like the moonlight.'
तपोधनाः सर्वसमा वयं यद्यपि पार्वति २५.
'Though we are all ascetics and equal in age, O Pārvatī—'
वृषभारोहणं वासः श्मशाने पाणिसंग्रहः २५.
'His vehicle is a bull, his dwelling is the cremation ground, and he takes hands in marriage there.'
जनहास्यकरं सर्वं त्वयारब्धमसांप्रतम् २५.
'All that you have undertaken now is a cause for ridicule among people.'
निवर्तय मनस्तस्मादस्मात्सर्वविरोधिनः २५.
'Turn your mind away, therefore, from this, which is opposed by all.'
