तन्नाशकृपया देवो नानास्थानेषु सोऽगमत् २४.
Out of compassion for her, the god wandered to various places.
स नदीः पर्वताश्चैव आश्रमान्सरसीस्तथा २४.
He went to rivers, mountains, hermitages, and lakes.
जगत्त्रयं परिभ्रम्य पुनरागात्स्वमाश्रमम् २४.
After wandering through the three worlds, he returned again to his own hermitage.
ततस्तृतीयनेत्रोत्थवह्निना नाकवासिनाम् २४.
Then, from the fire born of his third eye, for the dwellers of heaven—
सस तु तं भस्मसात्कृत्वा हरनेत्रोद्भवोऽनलः २४.
That fire, sprung from Hara’s eye, reduced him to ashes.
ततो भवो जगद्धेतोर्व्यभजज्जातवेदसम् २४.
Then Bhava, for the sake of the world, divided that fire.
भृंगेषु कोकिलास्येषु विहारेषु स्मरानलम् २४.
He placed the fire of desire among bees, in the cuckoo’s song, and in places of pleasure.
ज्वालयत्यनिशं सोऽग्निर्दुश्चिकित्स्योऽसुखावहः २४.
That fire burns ceaselessly, hard to cure and bringing suffering.
विललाप रतिर्द्दीना मधुना बंधुना सह २४.
Rati, afflicted, lamented together with her companion Madhu.
रत्याः प्रलापमाकर्ण्य देवदेवो वृषध्वजः २४.
Hearing Rati's lament, the god of gods, the bull-bannered one, listened.
अमूर्तोऽपि ह्ययं भद्रे कार्यं सर्वं पतिस्तव २४.
Though formless, O gentle one, your husband accomplishes all tasks.
यदा विष्णुश्च भविता वसुदेवात्मजो विभुः २४.
When Vishnu, the mighty one, is born as the son of Vasudeva,
सा प्रणम्य ततो रुद्रमिति प्रोक्ता रतिस्ततः २४.
Then Rati, bowing to Rudra, spoke thus.
देवर्षे वर्ण्यते चेयं कथा पीयूषसोदरा २५.
O divine sage, this story is narrated, akin to nectar's own sibling.
भगवान्स्वां सतीं भार्यां वधार्थं चापि तारकम् २५.
The blessed one, his own wife Sati, and also Taraka for the purpose of destruction.
त्वयैवोक्तं स विरहात्सत्यास्तप्यति वै तपः २५.
It was you who said: he suffers from separation from Sati, and thus performs austerity.
सत्यमेतत्पुरा पार्थ भवस्येदं मनीषितम् २५.
This is true, O Partha, formerly it was the intention of Bhava.
तपो विना शुद्धदेहो न कथंचन जायते २५.
Without austerity, a pure body is never produced.
महत्कर्माणि यानीह तेषां मूलं सदा तपः २५.
All great deeds here have austerity as their constant root.
एतस्मात्कारणाद्देवो दर्पितं तं ददाह तु २५.
For this reason, the god burned that arrogant one.
विहाय सगणो देवः कैलासं समपद्यत २५.
Abandoning him, the god, with his attendants, proceeded to Kailasa.
जीवितं स्वं विनिंदंती बभ्रामेतस्ततश्चसा २५.
She, scorning her own life, wandered from there.
कासि कस्यासि कल्याणि किमर्थं चापि रोदिषि २५.
Who are you, whose daughter are you, O auspicious one, and why do you weep?
निवेदिते तथा रत्या शैलः संभ्रांतमानसः २५.
When Rati had thus informed him, the mountain was filled with anxious thoughts.
सा तत्र पितरौ प्राह सखीनां वदनेन च २५.
There she spoke to her parents, and also through the words of her friends.
देहवासं परित्यक्ष्ये प्राप्स्ये वाभिमतं पतिम् २५.
I will abandon this body, or I will obtain the husband I desire.
नियमैर्विविधैस्तस्माच्छोषयिष्ये कलेवरम् २५.
Therefore, by various disciplines, I will dry up this body.
श्रुत्वेति वचनं माता पिता च प्राह तां शुभाम् २५.
Hearing these words, her mother and father spoke to that auspicious one.
सोढुं क्लेशात्मरूपस्य तपसः सौम्यदर्शने २५.
It is difficult to endure the suffering inherent in ascetic practice, O gentle one.
भाविनोर्था भवंत्येव नरस्यानिच्छतोपि हि २५.
Indeed, destined outcomes come to pass for a person, even if he does not wish for them.
