किंचिच्छयाममुखोदग्रस्तनभागावनामिताम् २२.
Slightly reclining, her face turned sideways, her breast prominent and bent down—
ततः किंचित्प्रमिलिते मेनानेत्रांबुजद्वये २२.
Then, as Menā's lotus-like eyes closed a little—
जन्मदाया जगन्मातुः क्रमेण जठरांतरम् २२.
The womb of the mother of the world, the giver of birth, gradually—
ततो जगन्मं गलदा मेना हिमगिरेः प्रिया २२.
Then, the world was born from Menā, beloved of Himavat.
तस्यां तु जायमानायां जंतवः स्थाणुजंगमाः २२.
As she was giving birth, creatures—both stationary and moving—
अभवत्क्रूरसत्त्वानां चेतः शांतं च देहिनाम् २२.
The minds of cruel beings became peaceful, and so too those of the embodied.
वनाश्रिताश्चौषधयः स्वादवंति फलानि च २२.
Forest herbs flourished, and fruits became sweet.
मारुतश्च सुखस्पर्शो दिशश्च सुमनोहराः २२.
The wind was pleasant to the touch, and the directions were exceedingly beautiful.
प्रभावस्तीर्थमुख्यानां तदा पुण्यतमोऽभवत् २२.
The radiance of the chief sacred places became most pure at that time.
सर्वेषामभवच्छ्रद्धा जन्मकाले गुहारणेः २२.
Faith arose in all at the time of birth in the cave of the mountain.
हरिब्रह्ममहेंद्रार्कवायुवह्निपुरोगमाः २२.
Hari, Brahma, Mahendra, the Sun, Vāyu, Agni, and those led by them,
मेरुप्रभृतयश्चापि मूर्तिमंतो महानगाः २२.
And the great mountains, beginning with Meru, who possess form,
सागराः सरितश्चैव समाजग्मुश्च सर्वशः॥ २२.
The oceans and the rivers also, all of them assembled together.
हिमशैलोऽभवल्लोके तदा सर्वैश्चराचरैः २२.
Then, Himashaila became manifest in the world, along with all moving and unmoving beings.
अनुभूयोत्सवं ते च जग्मुः स्वानालयांस्तदा॥ २२.
Having experienced the festival, they then returned to their own abodes.
ततश्च शैलजा देवी चिक्रीड सुभगा तदा मुनीनां चापि याः कन्यास्ताभिः सार्धं च शोभना॥ २३.
Then the blessed goddess, daughter of the mountain, played joyfully at that time, together with the beautiful daughters of the sages.
कदाचिदथ मेरुस्थो वासवः पांडुनंदन २३.
Once, O son of Pandu, Indra, who dwells on Meru, at that time—
मां दृष्ट्वा च सहस्राक्षः समुत्थायातिहर्षितः २३.
Seeing me, the thousand-eyed one rose up, exceedingly delighted.
महासुर महोन्मादकालानल दिवस्पते २३.
O great asura, O lord of day, O blazing fire of great madness,
पृष्टस्त्वेवं मया शक्रः प्रोवाच वचनं स्मयन् २३.
Then, when I questioned him, Shakra spoke these words to me, smiling.
तत्फलोदयसंपत्तौ तद्भवान्संस्मृतो मुने २३.
At the attainment of the fruit and success, you are remembered, O sage.
निर्वृतिं परमां याति निवेद्यार्थं सुहृज्जने॥ २३.
One attains supreme contentment by informing friends of the matter.
तद्भवाञ्छैलजां देवीं शैलंद्रं शैलवल्लभाम् २३.
Therefore, you should approach the goddess, daughter of the mountain, beloved of the lord of mountains.
ततस्तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य गतोऽहं शैलसत्तमम् २३.
Then, having heard those words, I went to the best of mountains.
तत्र हैमे स्वयं तेन महाभक्त्या निवेदिते २३.
There, in the golden abode, he himself, with great devotion, made the offering.
गृहीतार्घ्यं ततो मां च पप्रच्छ श्लक्ष्णया गिरा २३.
Having received the arghya, he then asked me with gentle words.
अहमप्यस्य तत्प्रोच्य प्रत्यवोचं गिरीश्वरम् २३.
I also, having spoken to him, replied to the lord of mountains.
अवगाह्य स्थितवता क्रियते प्राणिपालना २३.
Having entered and remained there, the protection of living beings is accomplished.
तपोजपव्रतस्नानौः साध्यंत्यात्मनः परम् २३.
Through austerity, recitation, vows, and bathing, one attains the supreme self.
त्वं समुद्धरसि विप्रान्किमतः प्रोच्यते तव २३.
You uplift the Brahmins—what more can be said of your greatness?
