A son will be born to him, who will bring about Tāraka’s end.
The god Ardhanārīśvara, pervading the universe, is established therein.
From him, woman was born separately, and likewise man separately.
And the eleven Rudras, men, were born as his portions.
Accept as your daughter the one who belongs to the world, to me, and to you as well.
Thus addressed by me, Daksha considered her as established in the role of a daughter.
Then, after some time, her father disregarded her.
Those who do not honor Rudra are certainly a disgrace to their lineage.
Because of that disrespect, the goddess too abandoned her body.
Now, she will become the daughter of the mountain Himavat.
Therefore, you must enter the womb of Menā and do what is to be done.
When she, mocked by Rudra, undertakes great austerity,
And when she herself attains a beautiful, fair form,
In the cave of that very Himavat, attended by accomplished sages,
A great son will be born to those two, who have performed intense austerity.
For without austerity, O beautiful one, there is no accomplishment anywhere.
At that time, O goddess, a demon will also emerge from your body.
Because you, O goddess, will slay Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa,
Therefore, O bestower of boons, the world will worship you, O goddess.
The best of the twice-born worship you as Gāyatrī, whose face is Oṃkāra.
The Vaiśyas worship you for prosperity, and so do the Śūdras, O auspicious one.
You are the great collection of means, the policy among those who pursue right judgment.
You are the intelligence of all beings; you are the path of all embodied creatures.
You are the radiance of those with auspicious forms; you are the peace of those who perform virtuous deeds.
You are the great tide among the oceans; you are the playfulness of those who delight in sport.
You are the night of time, the destroyer of all worlds without remainder.
Be gracious to us who bow before you; look upon us with gentle gaze.
Thus, those who praise you, O goddess, and worship you, O auspicious one—
Thus addressed, the goddess of night replied, 'So be it,' with hands joined in reverence.
There, seated in the great palace, resting against a wall of gems—
