जयेति मुदिता दैत्यास्तुष्टुवुस्तारकं तदा २१.
Joyful, the demons praised Taraka, shouting 'Victory!'
धनुर्बाणरवांश्चोग्रान्कराघातांश्च चक्रिरे २१.
They made fierce sounds of bows and arrows, and blows with their hands.
ततो देवान्पुरस्कृत्य पशुपालः पशूनिव २१.
Then, leading the gods, Taraka herded them like a cowherd with his cattle.
महीसागरकूलस्थं तारकः स पुरं बली २१.
Taraka, powerful, brought his city to the shore of the earth-ocean.
प्रासादर्बहुभिः कीर्णं दिव्याश्चर्योपशोभितम् २१.
It was filled with many palaces, adorned with wondrous divine marvels.
गीतघोषश्च व्याघोषो भुज्यंतां विषयास्त्विति २१.
There was the sound of singing, loud proclamations, and the enjoyment of pleasures.
महोत्सवेन महता पुत्रस्त्रीप्रतिनंदितः २१.
With a great festival, resounding with the voices of sons and wives.
स्तूयमानो दितिसुतैरप्सरोभिर्विनोदितः २१.
He was praised by the sons of Diti and entertained by the Apsaras.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे काचि द्दिव्यस्त्री तत्पुरेऽभवत् २१.
Meanwhile, a certain celestial woman appeared in that city.
रूपेणानुपमा पार्थ नानाभरणभूषिता २१.
Her beauty was unmatched, O Partha, adorned with various ornaments.
कासि देवी मम ब्रूहि किं मया रूपसुंदरि २१.
Who are you, O goddess of Kāśi? Tell me, beautiful one, what should I do?
अहं त्रैलोक्यलक्ष्मीति विद्धि मां दैत्यसत्तम २१.
Know me as the fortune of the three worlds, O best of Daityas.
वीर्यवंतं त्वनलसं तपस्विनमकातरम् २१.
A man who is vigorous, not lazy, devoted to austerity, and fearless—
भीरुं निर्विण्ण्मत्यर्थं साध्वीपीडाकरं नरम् २१.
Not one who is timid, greatly distressed, or a source of suffering to virtuous women—
महेंद्रण च माता ते यदा सा व्यपमानिता २१.
When your mother was insulted by Mahendra—
तारकश्च ततः प्राह परमं चेति तां तदा २१.
Then Tāraka spoke to her, saying the highest words.
ततो दैत्याधिपं नार्यो दानवानां विभूषिताः २१.
Then the wives of the Dānavas, adorned, approached the lord of the Daityas.
देवाश्च द्वारि तिष्ठंति बद्धा दैत्यैर्भृशातुराः २१.
The gods stood at the gate, bound by the Daityas, greatly afflicted.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे विष्णुर्दैत्यरूपं समास्थितः २१.
Meanwhile, Viṣṇu assumed the form of a Daitya.
इदमल्पतरंनाम यदमीषां च दृश्यते २१.
This is a minor matter, whatever is seen of these.
बलीयांसं समासाद्य न नमेद्यो न चास्ति सः २१.
Having encountered one who is stronger, he neither bows nor exists.
उपहासमुखेनामी उपदेशं हरेर्मुखात् २१.
Through mockery, these received instruction from Hari's mouth.
नृत्यंतस्ते च बहुधा दैत्याश्चासुरयोषितः २१.
The Daityas and Asura women danced in many ways.
विष्णुर्दैत्यप्रतीहारं ततः प्रोवाच बुद्धिमान् २१.
Then Viṣṇu, wise, spoke to the Daitya doorkeeper.
प्रतीहारस्ततो हृष्टः सभामध्ये विवेश सः २१.
The doorkeeper, delighted, entered the assembly hall.
उवाचानाविलं वाक्यमल्पाक्षरपरिस्फुटम् २१.
He spoke words that were clear, concise, and unambiguous.
भृशं विनोदकारिणि स्पृहा चेद्द्रष्टुमर्हसि २१.
If you truly desire to see that which brings great delight, you are worthy to do so.
क्षत्ता चेति वचः श्रुत्वा कालनेमिं तदाब्रवीत् २१.
Upon hearing these words, the charioteer then spoke to Kālanemi.
रक्षपाल सहैभिस्त्वं राजानमनुकूलय २१.
Together with the guardians of the demons, you should act favorably toward the king.
मर्कमध्ये विष्णुमर्को यातस्त्यक्त्वा च दैत्यताम् २१.
In the midst of the monkeys, Viṣṇu, the Sun, has arrived, abandoning his demonhood.
