तांश्च त्रस्तान्समालोक्य श्रुत्वा स चतुरो हतान् २१.
Observing them terrified and hearing that the four had been killed,
तथेत्युक्त्वा स च प्रायात्तारके रथमास्थिते २१.
He replied, 'So be it,' and proceeded towards Tāraka, who was mounted on his chariot.
साविष्कारं सधिक्कारं प्रयातो दानवेश्वरः २१.
The lord of the Daityas advanced openly and with defiance.
सर्वायुधपरिष्कारं सर्वास्त्रपरिरक्षितम् २१.
He was equipped with all weapons and protected by every kind of missile.
सैन्येन महता युक्तो नादयन्विदिशो दिशः २१.
Joined by a vast army, he made the directions and quarters resound.
रथं मातलिना युक्तं तप्तहेमपरिष्कृतम् २१.
His chariot, yoked by Mātali and adorned with refined gold, was made ready.
गंधर्वकिंनरोद्गीतमप्सरोनृत्यसंकुलम्॥ २१.
It was filled with the songs of Gandharvas and Kinnaras, and crowded with the dances of Apsarases.
सर्वायुधमहाबाधं महारत्नसमाचितम् २१.
It was furnished with all mighty weapons and filled with great jewels.
दांशिता लोकपालाश्च तसथुः सगरुडध्वजाः २१.
The guardians of the worlds, bearing Garuḍa banners, stood ready.
चेलुश्च सागराः सप्त तथाऽनश्यद्रवेः प्रभा २१.
The seven oceans surged, and the radiance of the sun was obscured.
ततः समस्तमुद्वृत्तं ततोदृस्यत तारकः २१.
Then Tāraka, in his full might, was seen rising up.
लोकावसाद मेकत्र लोकोद्धरणमेकतः २१.
On one side was the ruin of the worlds, on the other, their deliverance.
प्रशशंसुः सुराः पार्थ तदा तस्मिन्समागमे॥ २१.
At that assembly, O Pārtha, the gods offered praise.
अस्त्राणि तेजांसि धनानि योधा यशो बलं वीरपराक्रमाश्च २१.
Weapons, energies, treasures, warriors, glory, strength, and heroic valor—
अथाभिमुखमायांतं देवा विनतर्पवभिः २१.
Then, as he approached, the gods gazed at him with unsatisfied wrath.
स तानचिंत्य दैत्येंद्रो देवबाणक्षतान्हृदि २१.
The lord of the Daityas, seeing them wounded in the heart by the gods' arrows—
नारायणं च सप्तत्या नवत्या च हुताशनम् २१.
He struck Nārāyaṇa with seventy arrows, and Agni with ninety.
धनदं चैव सप्त्या वरुणं च तथाष्टभिः २१.
He pierced Kubera with seventy arrows, and likewise Varuṇa with eight.
विव्याध पुनरेकैकं दशभिर्मर्मभेदिभिः २१.
Again, he struck each one with ten arrows that shattered their vital points.
गरुडं दशभिश्चैव महिषं नवभिस्तथा २१.
He struck Garuḍa with ten arrows, and likewise the buffalo with nine.
चकार वर्मजालानि चिच्छेद च धनूंषि च २१.
He created nets of armor and cut down their bows as well.
चापान्यन्यानि संगृह्य यावन्मुंचंति सायकान् २१.
Seizing other bows, they continued to release arrows.
ताडयामास शक्रं स हृदि सोपि मुमोचह २१.
He struck Indra in the heart, and Indra too released an arrow.
तार्क्ष्यविष्णू समाजघ्ने शराभ्यां तावमुह्यताम् २१.
He struck Garuḍa and Viṣṇu with two arrows, so that they were bewildered.
निर्ऋतेश्चाकरोत्कार्यं भीतबीतं विमोहयन् २१.
He performed a feat against Nirṛti, terrifying and confounding him.
ततः प्राप्य हरिः संज्ञां प्रोत्साह्य च दिशां पतीन् २१.
Then Hari regained consciousness and encouraged the guardians of the directions.
धूमकेतोर्ज्वलात्क्रुद्धस्तस्य च्छित्त्वा न्यपातयत् २१.
Enraged, he cut down the blazing banner of Dhūmaketu and brought it down.
धनेशश्च धनुः क्रुद्धो बिभेदबहुधा शरैः २१.
Kubera, enraged, shattered his bow into many pieces with arrows.
निर्ऋतिस्तिलशो वर्ण चक्रे बाणैस्ततो रणे २१.
Nirṛti, in battle, made his complexion like sesame seeds with arrows.
लिहंतः सृक्किणीं देवा वासुदेवादयस्तदा २१.
Then the gods, led by Vāsudeva, licked their lips for blood.
