ग्रस्तुमैच्छद्रणे दैत्यः सगरुत्मंतमच्युतम् २०.
The demon, together with Garuda and the infallible one, sought to devour in battle.
वदनं पूरयामास दिव्यैस्त्रैर्महाबलः २०.
The mighty one filled his mouth with three divine beings.
परिवर्तितकायार्धः पपाताथ ममार च २०.
With half his body turned, he fell and then died.
महिषं प्राह मत्तस्त्वं वधं नार्हसि दानव २०.
He said to the buffalo: 'You are intoxicated; demon, you do not deserve death.'
उत्तिष्ठ गच्छ मन्मुक्तो द्रुतमस्मान्महारणात् २०.
'Rise, go, released by me; swiftly depart from this great battle.'
तस्मिन्पराङ्मुखे दैत्ये महिषे शुंभदानवः २०.
As the demon turned away, Shumbha the demon approached the buffalo.
निर्मध्य पाणिना पाणिं धनुरादाय भैरवम् २०.
Crushing hand against hand, he took up the dreadful bow.
स चित्रयोधी दृढमुष्टिपातस्ततश्व विष्णुं च दैत्यः २०.
That skilled warrior, with a strong fist-blow, then struck Vishnu, the demon.
विष्णुश्च दैत्येंद्रशरार्दितो भृशं भुशुंडिमादाय कृतांततुल्याम् २०.
And Vishnu, greatly afflicted by the demon king's arrows, seized a mace equal to the end of time.
ततस्त्रिभिः शंभुभुजं द्विषष्ट्या सूतस्य शीर्षं दशक्षिश्च केतुम् २०.
Then, with three arrows at Shambhu's arm, sixty-two at the charioteer's head, and ten at the banner,
स तैश्च विद्धो व्यथितो बभूव दैत्येश्वरो विस्रुतशोणिताक्तः २०.
Pierced by those, the lord of demons became distressed, his fame stained with blood.
योषित्सुवध्योऽसि रणं विभुंच शुंभाऽशुभ स्वल्पतरैरहोभिः २०.
'You are fit to be slain by a woman; Shumbha, the mighty, will destroy you in battle in just a few days.'
जम्भोऽथ तद्विष्णुमुखान्निशम्य जगर्ज चोच्चैः कृतसिंहनादः २०.
Then Jambha, hearing those words from Vishnu's mouth, roared loudly, making a lion's cry.
किमेभिस्ते जलावास दैत्यैर्हीनपराक्रमैः २०.
'What use are these water-dwelling demons, lacking valor?'
यत्ते पूर्वं हता दैत्या हिरण्याक्षमुखाः किल २०.
Those Daityas whom you slew before, beginning with Hiraṇyākṣa—
पश्य तालप्रती काशौ भुजावेतौ हरे मम २०.
See, O Hari, these two arms of mine are like palm trees.
इत्युक्तः केशवस्तेन सृक्किणी संलिहन्रुषा २०.
Thus addressed by him, Keśava, in anger, licked his lips.
ततस्तस्याप्यनुपदं कालायसमयं दृढम् २०.
Then, following him closely, he took up a strong iron mace.
तदायुधद्वयं दृष्ट्वा जंभो न्यस्य रथे धनुः २०.
Seeing those two weapons, Jambha set aside his bow on the chariot.
द्वितीयं मुद्गरं चानु गृहीत्वा विनदन्रणे २०.
Then, taking up a second mace, he roared in the battle.
ताभ्यां चातिप्रहाराभ्यामुभौ गरुडकेशवौ २०.
With those two mighty blows, both Garuḍa and Keśava—
तदद्भुतं महद्दृष्ट्वा जगर्जुर्दैत्यसत्तमाः २०.
Seeing that great and wondrous deed, the foremost of the Daityas cheered.
सिंहनादैस्तलोन्नाहैर्धनुर्नादैश्च बाणजैः २०.
With lion-roars, uplifted palms, the twang of bows, and the sound of arrows—
शंखांश्च पूरयामासुश्चिक्षिपुर्देवता भृशम्॥ २०.
They filled their conches and the gods rejoiced greatly.
संज्ञामवाप्याथ महारणे हरिः सवैनतेयः परिरभ्य जंभम् २०.
Then, having exchanged signals in the great battle, Hari, together with the son of Vinatā, embraced Jambha.
तमालोक्य पलायंतं विध्वस्तध्वजकार्मुकम् २१.
Seeing him fleeing, his banner and bow shattered—
अथायान्निकटं विष्णोः सुरेशस्त्वरयान्वितः २१.
Then, the lord of the gods, filled with urgency, approached Viṣṇu.
किमेभिः क्रीडसे देव दानवैर्दुष्टमानसैः २१.
Why do you play, O god, with these Dānavas of wicked mind?
शक्तेनोपेक्षितो नीचो मन्यते बलमात्मनः २१.
When the lowly one is ignored by the powerful, he imagines strength in himself.
अथाग्रेसरसंपत्त्या रथिनो जयमाययुः २१.
Then, by advancing to the front, the charioteers achieved victory.
