आजग्मुः समरे क्रुद्धा विष्णुमक्लिष्टकारिणम् २०.
Enraged, they came to battle against Viṣṇu, the doer of effortless deeds.
शुम्भः शूलेन तीक्ष्णेन प्रासेन ग्रसनस्तथा २०.
Shumbha, with a sharp spear and a javelin, attacked fiercely.
जघ्नुर्नारायणं शेषा विशिखैर्मर्मभेदिभिः २०.
The others struck Narayana with arrows that pierced the vital points.
उपदेशा गुरोर्यद्वत्सच्छिष्यं बहुधेरिताः २०.
Just as disciples receive many instructions from their teacher,
ममर्द दैत्यसेनां तद्धर्ममर्थवचो यथा २०.
He crushed the army of demons, as one follows the words of righteousness and purpose.
मथनं दशभिश्चैव शुम्भं पंचभिरेव च २०.
Ten attacked Mathana, and five attacked Shumbha.
जंभं द्वादशभिस्तीक्ष्णैः सर्वांश्चैकैक शोऽष्टभिः २०.
Twelve with sharp weapons attacked Jambha, and each of the others with eight.
चक्रुर्गाढतरं यत्नमावृण्वाना हरिं शरैः २०.
They made a stronger effort, covering Hari with arrows.
हस्ताच्चापं च संरंभाच्चिच्छेद महिषासुरः २०.
Mahishasura, in his fury, cut the bow from his hand.
भुजावस्य च विव्याध शंभो बाणायुतेन वै २०.
Shumbha pierced his arm with ten thousand arrows.
तां प्राहिणोत्स वेगेन मथनाय महाहवे २०.
He sent her swiftly against Mathana in the great battle.
आहत्य पातयामास विनदन्कालमेघवत् २०.
Striking, he made her fall, roaring like a storm cloud.
नैतदस्ति बलं व्यक्तं यत्राशीर्यत सा गदा २०.
There was no evident strength where that mace was broken.
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरं दिव्यरत्नपरिष्कृतम् २०.
He took up a dreadful club adorned with divine jewels.
तमायांतं वियत्येव त्रयो दैत्या ह्यवारयन् २०.
As he advanced, three demons blocked him in the sky.
शक्त्या च महिषो दैत्यो विनदंतो महाररवम् २०.
Mahisha, the demon, with a spear, roared loudly.
जग्राह शक्तिमुग्रोग्रां शतघंटामहास्वनाम् २०.
He took up a fierce spear, resounding with a hundred bells.
तामायान्तीमथालोक्य जंभोऽन्यस्य रथात्त्वरात् २०.
Seeing it approaching, Jambha quickly descended from another chariot.
तयैव गरुडं मूर्ध्नि जघ्ने स प्रहसन्बली २०.
With that same weapon, he struck Garuda on the head, laughing with strength.
विचेताश्चाभवद्युद्धे गरुडः शक्तिपीडितः २०.
In the battle, Garuḍa became unconscious, afflicted by the power of the weapon.
करस्पर्शेन कृतवान्विमोहं विनतात्मजम् २०.
With a mere touch of his hand, he caused the son of Vinatā to lose awareness.
कुभार्यस्य यथा पुंसः सर्वंस्याच्चिंतितं वृथा २०.
Just as all the thoughts of a man with a bad wife are in vain,
कृत्वा च तलनिर्घोषं रौद्रमस्त्रं मुमोच सः २०.
And making a loud sound with his palm, he released a fierce weapon.
भूमिर्दिशश्च विदिशो बामजालमया बुभुः २०.
The earth, the directions, and the intermediate quarters became covered with a net of arms.
ब्राह्ममस्त्रं चकाराशु सर्वास्त्रविनिवारणम् २०.
He quickly employed the Brāhma weapon, which wards off all other weapons.
अस्त्रे प्रतिहते तस्मिन्विष्णुर्दानवसूदनः २०.
When that weapon was repelled, Viṣṇu, the slayer of the Dānavas,
संधीयमानेस्त्रे तस्मिन्मारुतः परुषो ववौ २०.

नारायणांस्त्रं ग्रसनस्तु चक्रे त्वाष्ट्रं निमिश्चास्त्रवरं मुमोच २०.
As the Nārāyaṇa weapon was about to consume, Nimi released the Tvāṣṭra weapon, the best of weapons.
