तत्र स्थितं चतुर्बाहुं हरिं चानुपमद्युतिम् १९.
There stood Hari, four-armed, possessing incomparable splendor.
अयं स देवः सर्वेषां शरणं केशवोऽरिहा १९.
This is that god, Kesava, destroyer of foes, the refuge of all.
एनमाश्रित्य लोकेशा यज्ञभागभुजोऽमराः १९.
Rulers of the worlds and immortals who partake of sacrificial offerings rely upon him.
तं जघ्नुर्विविधैः शस्त्रैः परिवार्य समंततः १९.
They surrounded him on all sides and struck him with various weapons.
षष्ट्या विव्याधबाणानां कालनेमिर्जनार्दनम् १९.
Kalanemi pierced Janardana with sixty arrows.
जंभकश्चैव सप्तत्या शुंभो दशभिरेव च १९.
Jambhaka struck with seventy, and Shumbha with ten arrows.
दशभिर्दशभिः शल्यैर्जघ्नुः सगरुडं रणे १९.
With ten and ten spears, they attacked him and Garuda in battle.
एकैकं दानवं जघ्ने षड्भिः पड्भिरजिह्नगैः १९.
He struck each demon with six swift-footed blows.
विष्णुं विव्याध हृदये रोषाद्रक्तविलोचनः १९.
With eyes reddened in anger, he pierced Vishnu's heart.
मयूखा इव संदीप्ताः कौस्तुभस्य स्फुरत्त्विषः १९.
They shone like blazing rays, the flashing brilliance of the Kaustubha gem.
स तमुद्ग्राह्य वेगेन दानवाय मुमोच वै १९.
He seized it with force and hurled it at the demon.
चिच्छेद तिलशः क्रुद्धो दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् १९.
Angry, he cut it into tiny pieces, displaying the dexterity of his hand.
तेन दैत्यस्य हृदयं ताडयामास वेगतः १९.
With that, he struck the demon's heart with speed.
शक्तिं जग्राह तीक्ष्णाग्रां हेमघंटाट्टहासिनीम् १९.
He took up a spear, its tip sharp, adorned with golden bells and a fierce blade.
भिन्नं शक्त्या भुजं तस्य स्रुतशोणितमाबभौ १९.
His arm, struck by the spear, appeared split open and streaming with blood.
ततो विष्णुः प्रकुपितो जग्राह विपुलं धनुः १९.
Then Viṣṇu, enraged, seized his mighty bow.
दैत्यस्य हृदयं षड्भिर्विव्याध च शरैस्त्रिभिः १९.
He pierced the demon's heart with six arrows and with three more.
द्वाभ्यां धनुर्ज्याधनुषी भुजं चैकेन पत्रिणा १९.
With two arrows he struck the bowstring and the bow, and with one feathered shaft, his arm.
स्रुतरक्तारुणः प्रांशुः पीडाचलितमानसः १९.
Tall, flushed red by flowing blood, his mind shaken by pain.
ततः कंपितमालक्ष्य गदां जग्राह केशवः १९.
Then Keśava, seeing him trembling, took up his mace.
सा पपात शिरस्युग्रा सहसा कालनेमिनः १९.
That fierce mace fell suddenly upon Kālanemi's head.
स्रुतरक्तौघरंध्रश्च स्रुतधातुरिवाचलः १९.
Blood poured in streams from his wounds, as ore flows from a mountain.
पतितस्य रथोपस्थे दानवस्याच्युतोऽरिहा १९.
As the demon fell onto the chariot floor, Acyuta, destroyer of foes—
गच्छासुर विमुक्तोऽसि सांप्रतं जीव निर्वृतः १९.
said: 'Depart, Asura; you are now freed. Go, live in peace.'
एवं वचस्तस्य निशम्य विष्णोः सर्वेश्वरस्याथ रथं निमेषात् १९.
Hearing these words from Viṣṇu, Lord of all, he left his chariot in an instant.
तं दृष्ट्वा दानवाः सर्वे क्रुद्धाः स्वैःस्वैर्बलैर्वृताः २०.
Seeing this, all the Dānavas, enraged, gathered with their own forces.
पर्वताभे गजे भीमे मदस्राविणि दुर्दमे २०.
On a mighty elephant, mountain-like, fierce, wild with rut and hard to restrain,
स्वर्णवर्णांचिते यद्वन्नगे दावाग्निसंवृते २०.
adorned with gold, in a forest thick with trees and encircled by wildfire,
तस्यासन्दानवा रौद्रा गजस्य परिरक्षिणः २०.
the fierce Dānavas, protectors of the elephant, stood guard.
अश्वमारुह्य शैलाभं हरिमाद्रवत् २०.
Mounting horses, they rushed at Hari, who was like a mountain.
