वज्रास्त्रं च प्रकुर्वाणौ दानवेंद्रमयुध्यताम् १९.
Both were employing the thunderbolt weapon, fighting against the lord of the demons.
रथो ध्वजो धनुश्चैव छत्रं च कवचं तथा १९.
The chariot, the banner, the bow, the umbrella, and the armor as well—
तद्दृष्ट्वा दुकरं कर्म सोऽश्विभ्यां भीमविक्रमः १९.
Seeing that difficult feat, the mighty Ashvins, of terrible valor—
ततः शशाम वज्रास्त्रं कालनेमिस्ततो रुषा १९.
Then, enraged, Kalanemi ceased the thunderbolt weapon.
तावभिप्रायमालक्ष्य संत्यज्य समरांगणम् १९.
Perceiving their intention, he left the battlefield.
तयोरनुगतो दैत्यः कालनेमिर्नदन्मुहुः १९.
Kalanemi, the demon, followed them, roaring again and again.
स काल इव कल्पांते यदा वासवमाद्रुतः १९.
He, like Time at the end of an age, pursued Indra.
हाहारावं प्रकुर्वाणास्तदा देवाश्च मेनिरे १९.
As cries of 'ha-ha' arose, the gods regarded it thus.
चेलुः शिखरिणो मुख्याः पेतुरुल्का नभस्तलात् १९.
The chief mountain peaks moved; meteors fell from the sky.
तां भूताविकृतिं दृष्ट्वा देवाः सेंद्रा भयावहाः १९.
Seeing that terrifying distortion of beings, the gods with Indra were struck with fear.
नमो ब्रह्मण्यदेवाय गोब्राह्मणहिताय च १९.
Salutations to the god devoted to Brahman, and to the protector of cows and Brahmins.
स नो रक्षतु गोविंदो भयार्तास्ते जगुः सुराः १९.
May Govinda protect us; distressed by fear, the gods sang thus.
विबुध्यैव च पर्यंकाद्योगनिद्रां विहाय सः १९.
He, awakening from his yogic sleep upon the couch, rose.
शारदंबरनीराब्जकांतिदेहच्छविः प्रभुः १९.
The Lord, whose radiance resembled the beauty of a lotus in autumn waters.
विमृश्य सुरसंक्षोभं वैनतेयमाताह्वयत् १९.
Reflecting on the distress of the gods, he summoned Garuda.
दिव्यनानास्त्रतीक्ष्णार्चिरारुह्यागात्सुराहवम् १९.
Mounting the divine bird, blazing with sharp rays of many celestial weapons, he went to the battle of the gods.
दानवेंद्रैर्नवांभोदसच्छायैः सर्वथोत्कटैः १९.
The chiefs of the demons were altogether fierce, their forms dark as new rain clouds.
तत्त्राणायाव्रजद्विष्णुः स्तूयमानो मुहुः सुरैः १९.
To protect them, Vishnu approached, repeatedly praised by the gods.
अथापश्यत दैत्येंद्रो वियति द्युतिमंडलम् १९.
Then the lord of the demons saw a radiant circle in the sky.
प्रभवं ज्ञातुमिच्छंतो दानवास्तस्य तेजसः १९.
Desiring to know the source of that brilliance, the demons sought its origin.
तत्र स्थितं चतुर्बाहुं हरिं चानुपमद्युतिम् १९.
There stood Hari, four-armed, possessing incomparable splendor.
अयं स देवः सर्वेषां शरणं केशवोऽरिहा १९.
This is that god, Kesava, destroyer of foes, the refuge of all.
एनमाश्रित्य लोकेशा यज्ञभागभुजोऽमराः १९.
Rulers of the worlds and immortals who partake of sacrificial offerings rely upon him.
तं जघ्नुर्विविधैः शस्त्रैः परिवार्य समंततः १९.
They surrounded him on all sides and struck him with various weapons.
षष्ट्या विव्याधबाणानां कालनेमिर्जनार्दनम् १९.
Kalanemi pierced Janardana with sixty arrows.
जंभकश्चैव सप्तत्या शुंभो दशभिरेव च १९.
Jambhaka struck with seventy, and Shumbha with ten arrows.
दशभिर्दशभिः शल्यैर्जघ्नुः सगरुडं रणे १९.
With ten and ten spears, they attacked him and Garuda in battle.
एकैकं दानवं जघ्ने षड्भिः पड्भिरजिह्नगैः १९.
He struck each demon with six swift-footed blows.
विष्णुं विव्याध हृदये रोषाद्रक्तविलोचनः १९.
With eyes reddened in anger, he pierced Vishnu's heart.
मयूखा इव संदीप्ताः कौस्तुभस्य स्फुरत्त्विषः १९.
They shone like blazing rays, the flashing brilliance of the Kaustubha gem.
