मत्वा सुरान्स्वकानेव जघ्ने घोरास्त्रलाघवात् १८.
Thinking the gods to be his own, he struck them down with the swiftness of his terrible weapon.
कांश्चित्खड्गेन तीक्ष्णेन कांश्चिन्नाराचवृष्टिभिः १८.
Some he struck with a sharp sword, others with showers of iron arrows.
शिरांसि केषाचिदपातयद्रथाद्भुजांस्तथा सारथींस्चोग्रवेगान् १८.
He struck off the heads of some from their chariots, as well as arms, and also charioteers, with fierce speed.
कालनेमी रुषाविष्टस्तेषां रूपं न बुद्धवान् १९.
Kalanemi, seized by anger, did not recognize their forms.
केशेषु गृह्य तं वीरं चकर्ष च ननाद च १९.
Seizing that hero by the hair, he dragged him and roared.
अहं निमिः कालनेमे सुतं मत्वा वधस्व मा १९.
I am Nimi; do not kill, thinking him to be Kalanemi’s son.
सुरैः सुदुर्जयाः कोट्यो निहतादश विद्धि तत् १९.
Know that ten million, most difficult to defeat even for the gods, have been slain.
स तेन बोधितो दैत्यो मुक्त्वा तं संभ्रमाकुलः १९.
Thus instructed, the demon released him, agitated and confused.
ब्रह्मास्त्रं तत्प्रजज्वाल ततः खे सुमहाद्भुतम् १९.
Then the Brahma-weapon blazed forth, a most wondrous sight in the sky.
शंबरास्त्रं ततः शांतं ब्राह्मप्रतिहतं तदा १९.
Then the Shambara-weapon was subdued, repelled by the Brahma-weapon.
महेंद्रजालमास्ताय चक्रे भीषणां तनुम् १९.
Assuming the great illusion of Indra, he took on a terrifying form.
तताप दानवानीकं गलन्मज्जाङ्घ्रिशोणितम् १९.
He tormented the army of the Dānavas, with marrow, limbs, and blood flowing.
गजानामगलन्मेदः पेतुश्चापि रथा भुवि १९.
The fat of elephants melted away, and chariots too fell to the ground.
इतश्चेतश्च सलिलं प्रार्थयंतस्तृषातुराः १९.
Here and there, tormented by thirst, they sought water.
तेषां प्रार्थयतां शीघ्रमन्योन्यं च विसर्पिणाम् १९.
As they swiftly begged each other for water, they spread out.
तोयार्थिनः पुरो दृष्ट्वा तोयं कल्लो लमालितम् १९.
Longing for water, they saw before them water, clear and rippling.
अप्राप्य सलिलं भूमावभ्याशे द्रुतमेव ते १९.
But unable to reach the water, they quickly fell to the ground nearby.
रथा गजाश्च पतितास्तुरंगाश्च श्रमान्विताः १९.
Chariots, elephants, and horses, exhausted, collapsed.
दानवानां कोटिकोटि व्यदृश्यतमृतं तदा १९.
Then countless millions of Dānavas appeared lifeless.
प्रकोपोद्भूतताम्राक्षः कालनेमी रुषातुरः १९.
Kalanemi, his eyes reddened with wrath, overcome by anger, was seen.
गंभीरास्फोटनिर्ह्रादजगद्धृदयकंपनः १९.
With a deep, resounding crash that made the heart of the world tremble.
ववर्ष शीतं च जलं दानवेन्द्रबलं प्रति १९.
He poured down cold water upon the army of the lord of the Dānavas.
बीजांकुरा इव म्लानाः प्राप्य वृष्टिं धरातले १९.
Like seeds and sprouts that wither when struck by rain upon the earth.
शस्त्रवृष्टिं ववर्षोग्रां देवनीकेषु दुर्जयः १९.
He rained a fierce shower of weapons upon the invincible hosts of the gods.
गतिं कांचिन्न पश्यन्ति गावः शीतार्दिता इव रथेषु च भयत्रस्तास्तत्रतत्र निलिल्यिरे॥ १९.
They could see no way forward, like cows afflicted by cold; terrified, they hid here and there among the chariots.
एवं ते लीयमानाश्च निहताः कालने मिना १९.
Thus, as they were being destroyed, they perished, seized by Death.
विभिन्ना भिन्नमूर्धानस्तथा भिन्नोरुजानवः १९.
Some were split open, their heads shattered, and others had their limbs broken.
तुरंगाणां सहस्राणि गजानामयुतानि च १९.
Thousands of horses and tens of thousands of elephants.
एवमाजौ महादैत्यः कालनेमिर्महासुरः १९.
In this way, on the battlefield, the great demon Kālanemi, the mighty asura—
