For she was of such form and strength, she considered them to be thousands of Yamas.
कल्पांतघोरसंकाशो बभूव स महारणः १७.
That great battle became like the terror at the end of an age.
पिपिषुर्गदया केचित्कोचिन्मुद्गरवृष्टिभिः १७.
Some sought to crush with maces, others with showers of clubs.
अपरे किंकरास्तस्य ललंबुर्बाहुमंडले १७.
Other attendants of his clung to her arm-circlet.
तस्यापरे च गात्रेषु दशनांश्चन्यपातयन् १७.
And on other parts of her body, they struck with their teeth.
एवं चाभिद्रुतस्तैः स ग्रसनः क्रोधमूर्छितः १७.
Thus, attacked by them, that Grasana, overwhelmed with anger, rushed forward.
कांश्चिदुत्थाय जघ्नेऽसौ मुष्टिभिः किंकरान्रणे १७.
Rising up, he struck some of the attendants in battle with his fists.
क्षणैकेन स तान्निन्ये यमलोकायभारत १७.
In a single moment, he sent them to the realm of Yama, O Bharata.
तमालोक्य यमोऽश्रांतं श्रांतंस्तांश्च हतान्स्वकान् १७.
Seeing Grasana tireless, and his own slain exhausted followers,
ग्रसनस्तु तमायांतमाजघ्ने गदयोरसि १७.
Grasana, as Yama approached, struck him in the chest with his mace.
व्याघ्रान्दंडेन संजघ्ने स रथान्न्य पतद्भुवि १७.
He struck the tigers with his staff, and the chariots fell to the ground.
वायुवेगेन सहसा ययौ यमरथं प्रति १७.
With the speed of the wind, he suddenly advanced toward Yama's chariot.
योधयामास बाहुभ्यामाकृष्य बलिनां वरः १७.
He began to fight with his arms, pulling, being the foremost among the strong.
ग्रसनं कटिवस्त्रे तु यमं गृह्य बलोत्कटः १७.
Grasana, powerful, seized Yama by his waist cloth.
विमोच्याथ यमः कष्टात्कंठेऽवष्टभ्य चासुरम् १७.
Then Yama, freeing himself from the hardship, grasped the demon by the throat.
ततो जघ्नतुरन्योन्यं मुष्टिभिर्निर्दयौ च तौ १७.
Then those two mercilessly struck each other with their fists.
स्कंधे निधाय दैत्यस्य मुखं विश्रांतिमैच्छत १७.
Placing the demon's face on his shoulder, he sought rest.
निष्पिपेष महीपृष्ठे विनिघ्नन्पार्ष्णिपाणिभिः १७.
He crushed him on the earth's surface, striking with his heels and hands.
निर्जीवमिति तं दृष्ट्वा ततः संत्यज्य दानवः १७.
Seeing him lifeless, the demon then abandoned him.
स्वकं सैन्यं समासाद्य तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः॥ १७.
Reaching his own army, he stood firm like an immovable mountain.
नादेन तस्य ग्रसनस्य संख्ये महायुधैश्चार्दितसर्वगात्राः १७.
By Grasana's roar in battle, and by the great weapons, all his limbs were afflicted.
धनाधिपस्य जंभेन सायकैर्मर्मभेदिभिः १८.
By Jambha, lord of wealth, with arrows piercing the vital parts.
तद्दृष्ट्वा कर्म दैत्यस्य धनाध्यक्षः प्रतापवान् १८.
Seeing that act of the demon, the mighty Lord of Wealth,
हृदि विव्याध बाणानां सहस्रेणाग्निवर्चसाम् १८.
pierced his heart with a thousand arrows blazing like fire.
नियुतं च तथा कोटिमर्बुदं चाक्षिपत्क्षणात् १८.
In an instant, he hurled ten million, a hundred million, and a billion more.
धनाध्यक्षः प्रचिक्षेप स्वर्गेप्सुः स्वधनं यथा १८.
Desiring victory, the Lord of Wealth launched his own weapons as if in heaven.
भूतानां बहुधा रावा जज्ञिरे खे महाभयाः १८.
Terrifying cries of many beings arose in the sky.
सा हि वैश्रवणस्यास्ते त्रैलोक्याभ्यर्चिता गदा १८.
That mace of Vaiśravaṇa, worshipped by the three worlds, stood ready.
दैत्यो गदाविघातार्थं शस्त्रवृष्टिं मुमोच ह १८.
The demon, to counter the mace, unleashed a shower of weapons.
परिघान्मुशलान्वृक्षान्गिरींश्चातुलविक्रमः १८.
With extraordinary might, he cast iron clubs, maces, trees, and mountains.
