With a Himalayan-like radiance, white-eared fly-whisks, golden lotuses, and a garland of pure, beautiful flowers.
He was seated upon the mighty elephant named Airavata, his great strength adorned with splendid, distinctive garments.
Praised by thousands of singers and extolled by thousands, Indra shone brilliantly in heaven.
Then, a meeting of the armies of both sides took place.
In that exceedingly fierce clash between the gods and the demons,
As the gods and demons roared, accompanied by the sound of conches and drums,
With the neighing of groups of horses and the noise of chariot wheels,
Their bodies distorted by rage, their minds abandoned to death,
Chariots collided with chariots, and elephants with mighty elephants.
Then, with spears, clubs, maces, axes, and swords,
With discs, javelins, darts, and also with goads,
With arrows, cane shafts, and pure, sharp-tipped weapons,
Covering all directions, it became as if enveloped in darkness.
Invisible in the gloom, they struck each other mutually.
With elephants, horses, foot soldiers, those falling and those already fallen,
With broken tusks, shattered skulls, and severed long, massive arms,
Broken chariots fell, their axles shattered and reduced to fragments.
Then rivers of blood flowed, bringing delight to the flesh-eaters.
In that fierce battle, Grasana, the destroyer of enemies, confronted the commander.
Then, seeing Grasana, Yama was overcome with wrath.
Though struck by many arrows, Grasana, of great valor, remained undaunted.
He struck with thousands and even five hundred thousand arrows.
Yama assailed Grasana with fierce showers of arrows; Grasana, lord of the Daityas, cut them down with a rain of his own.
Seeing his stream of arrows rendered fruitless, Yama—
—hurled a blazing mace at Grasana’s chariot.
Grasana, the destroyer of enemies, caught it effortlessly with his left hand.
He struck with force, and it fell to the ground.
With a spear, he struck Grasana firmly in the face.
Seeing Grasana fallen, Jambha, of terrible might—
By that blow, blood flowed from Yama’s mouth.
