ग्रसनस्य रथो युक्तो महामेघरवो बभौ १६.
The chariot of Grasana, yoked and resounding like a great cloud, shone.
कुजंभस्य रथो युक्तः पिशाचवदनैः खरैः १६.
Kujambha's chariot was yoked with donkeys bearing faces like goblins.
मेषस्य द्वीपिभिर्भीमैः कुञ्जरैः कालनेमिनः १६.
Mesha's chariot was drawn by fierce elephants, and Kalanemi's by mighty elephants.
चतुर्दंष्ट्रैर्गंधवद्भिश्चर्भिर्मेघसन्निभैः १६.
With four-tusked, fragrant, and fierce elephants resembling clouds.
सितचामरजालेन शोभिते पुष्पदामनि १६.
Adorned with a net of white yak tails, it shone in a flower-decked arena.
किंकिणीमालिनं चोष्ट्रमारूढोऽभूच्च जंभकः १६.
Jambhaka mounted a camel adorned with a garland of bells.
अन्ये च दानवा वीरा नानावाहनहेतयः १६.
Other heroic Danavas had various mounts and weapons.
नानाविधोत्तरासंगा नानामाल्यविभूषणाः १६.
With diverse upper garments and various garlands and ornaments.
नानावाद्यपरिस्यंदसाग्रेसरमहारथाः १६.
With many musical instruments resounding, the foremost among great chariots.
तद्बलं दैत्यसिंहस्य भीमरूपं व्यदृश्यत १६.
That army of the lion among Daityas appeared in a terrifying form.
स च दैत्येश्वरः क्रुद्धः समारूढो महारथम् जगद्धंतुं प्रवृत्तो वा प्रतस्थेऽसौ सुरान्प्रति॥ १६.
And the lord of the Daityas, enraged, mounted his great chariot and set out to destroy the world, advancing against the gods.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वायुर्देवदूतः सुरालयम् १६.
Meanwhile, Vayu, the divine messenger, went to the abode of the gods.
स गत्वा तु सभां दिव्यां महेंद्रस्य महात्मनः १६.
He entered the celestial assembly of Mahendra, the great-souled.
तच्छ्रुत्वा देवराजः स निमीलितविलोचनः १६.
Hearing this, the king of the gods closed his eyes.
संप्राप्तोऽतिविमर्दोऽयं देवानां दानवैः सह १६.
This intense conflict has arisen between the gods and the demons.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा च वचनं महेंद्रस्य गिरांपतिः १६.
Hearing these words of Mahendra, the lord of the mountains,
सामपूर्वं स्मृता नीतिश्चतुरंगामनीकिनीम् १६.
The policy remembered first is conciliation, and the fourfold army is to be arranged.
साम दानं च भेदश्च चतुर्थो दंड एव च १६.
Conciliation, gifts, division, and finally punishment—these are the four means.
तत्र साम प्रयोक्तव्यमार्येषु गुणवत्सु च १६.
Among the noble and virtuous, conciliation should be employed.
दण्डश्चापि प्रयोक्तव्यो नित्यकालं दुरात्मसु १६.
But punishment should always be used against the wicked.
श्रिया तेषां च किं कार्यं समृद्धानां तथापि यत् १६.
What use is wealth for those who are already prosperous?
एको ह्युपायो दंडोऽत्र भवतां यदि रोचते १६.
Here, if you approve, punishment alone is the one means.
लालितः पालितो वापि स्वस्वभावं न मुंचति १६.
Whether indulged or protected, one does not abandon his own nature.
एवमुक्तः सहस्राक्ष एवमेवेत्युवाच ह १६.
Thus addressed, the thousand-eyed one replied, 'So it is.'
बहुमानेन मे वाचं श्रृणुध्वं नाकवासिनः॥ १६.
With great respect, he said, 'O residents of heaven, listen to my words.'
भवंतो यज्ञभोक्तारः सतामिष्टाश्च सात्त्विकाः १६.
You are the enjoyers of sacrifices, dear to the virtuous, and possessed of purity.
भवतां च निमित्तेन बाधंते दानवेश्वराः १६.
Because of you, the lords of the demons cause distress.
क्रियतां समरे बुद्धिः सैन्यं संयोज्यतामिति १६.
Let counsel be taken for battle; let the army be assembled.
इत्युक्ताः समनह्यंत देवानां ये प्रधानतः १६.
Thus addressed, those who were foremost among the gods prepared themselves.
वाहनानि विमानानि योजयंतु ममामराः १६.
Let my immortals yoke the vehicles and aerial cars.
