अस्मद्वाक्येन यो मुक्तो जीवन्नपि मृतो हि सः १४.
'He who is released at our word is as good as dead, even if alive.'
कृत्वा मानपरिग्लनिं ये मुंचंति वरा हि ते १४.
Those who release, after setting aside their pride, are indeed noble.
तथा पितुर्वचः कार्यं मुंचामुं पुत्र वासवम् १४.
'Thus, fulfill your father's words; release Vāsava, my son.'
न मे कृत्यमनेनास्ति मातुराज्ञा कृता मया १४.
'I have no business with him; I have fulfilled my mother's command.'
करिष्ये त्वद्वचो देव एष मुक्तः शतक्रतुः १४.
'I will do your bidding, O god; this Śatakratu is released.'
परभुक्ता यथा नारी परभुक्तामिवस्रजम् १४.
Like a woman enjoyed by another, or a garland worn by someone else.
तपसो न परं किंचित्तपो हि महतां धनम् १४.
There is nothing higher than austerity; for the great, austerity is wealth.
तपसे मे रतिर्देव न विघ्नं तत्र मे भवेत् १४.
'My heart is set on austerity, O god; let there be no obstacle for me in that.'
क्रूरभावं परित्यज्य यदीच्छसि तपः सुत १४.
If you desire to perform austerity, my child, abandon cruel intent.
इत्युक्त्वा पद्मजः कन्यां ससर्ज्जयतलोचनाम् १४.
Having spoken thus, the Lotus-born released the maiden with lotus-like eyes.
वरांगीति च नामास्याः कृतवांश्च पितामहः १४.
And the grandsire gave her the name Varangi.
वज्रांगोऽपि तया सार्धं जगाम तपसे वनम् १४.
Vajranga also went with her to the forest for ascetic practice.
कालं कमलपत्राक्षः शुद्धबुद्धिर्महातपाः १४.
The lotus-eyed, pure-minded, and greatly austere one spent time there.
निराहारो घोरतपास्तपोराशिरजायत १४.
Without food, performing fierce austerities, he became a heap of asceticism.
जलांतरप्रविष्टस्य तस्य पत्नी महाव्रता १४.
His wife, steadfast in vows, entered the water with him.
निराहारं पतिं मत्वा तपस्तेपे पतिव्रता १४.
Thinking her husband was fasting, the devoted wife undertook austerity.
भूत्वा तु मर्कटाकारस्तस्याअभ्याशमागतः १४.
Then, taking the form of a monkey, he approached her.
तथा विलोलवसनां विलोलवदनां तथा १४.
In that way, with disheveled garments and disheveled face.
ततश्च मेषरूपेण क्लेशं तस्याश्चकार सः १४.
Then, taking the form of a sheep, he caused her distress.
अपाकर्षत दूरं स तस्माद्देवभृतस्तथा १४.
He dragged her far away, as did the divine attendant.
क्षमया च महाभागा क्रोधमण्वपि नाकरोत् १४.
The blessed one, with patience, did not even feel anger.
अग्निरूपेण तस्याश्च स ददाह महाश्रमम् एवं सिहवृकाद्याभिर्भीषिकाभिः पुनःपुनः॥ १४.
Taking the form of fire, he burned her great effort; likewise, again and again, with terrifying forms like lion and wolf.
विरराम यदा नैव वज्रांगमहिषी तदा १४.
When Vajranga's wife did not cease, then—
तां शापाभिमुखीं दृष्ट्वा शैलः पुरुषाविग्रहः १४.
Seeing her ready to curse, the mountain, in human form—
नाहं महाव्रते दुष्टः सेव्योऽहं सर्वदेहिनाम् १४.
I am not wicked, O steadfast one; I am to be served by all embodied beings.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे जातः कालो वर्षसहस्रिकः १४.
Meanwhile, a thousand-year period passed.
तुष्टः प्रोवाच वज्रांगं तमागम्य जलाशये॥ १४.
Satisfied, he approached Vajrāṅga at the water's edge and spoke to him.
ददामि सर्वकामांस्ते उत्तिष्ठ दितिनन्दन उवाच प्रांजलिर्वाक्यं सर्वलोकपितामहम्॥ १४.
I grant you all your desires; arise, O son of Diti. With joined palms, he addressed the Grandfather of all worlds.
आसुरो मेऽस्तु मा भावः शक्रराज्ये च मा रतिः १४.
Let there not be a demonic nature in me, nor any delight in the sovereignty of Indra.
एवमस्त्विति तं ब्रह्मा प्राह विस्मितमानसः १४.
So be it, said Brahmā to him, his mind filled with wonder.
