अप्यन्नजं च मनवो गिरिशेति च नाम च १३.
The Manus worshipped a food-born form, and the name given was 'Giriśa'.
यवजं देवलो लिंगं पतिमित्येव नाम च १३.
Devala worshipped a barley-born form, and the name was 'Pati'.
प्रतर्दनो बाणलिंगं हिरण्यभुजनाम च १३.
Pratardana worshipped a reed-born form, and the name was 'Hiraṇyabhuja'.
निष्पावजं दानवाश्च लिंगनाम च दिक्पतिम् १३.
The Dānavas worshipped a husk-born form, and the name was 'Dikpati'.
राजमाषमयं यक्षा नाम भूतपतिं स्मृतम् १३.
The Yakṣas worshipped a royal pulse-born form, and the name remembered was 'Bhūtapati'.
गौतमो गोरजमयं नाम गोपतिरेव च १३.
Gautama worshipped a cow-dust-born form, and the name was 'Gopati'.
स्कंदः पाषाणलिंगं च नाम सेनान्य एव च १३.
Skanda worshipped a stone-born form, and the name was 'Senānī'.
पुरोडाशमयं यज्वा स्रुवहस्तेति नाम च १३.
The sacrificer worshipped a sacrificial cake-born form, and the name was 'Sruvahasta'.
यवांकुरं जामदग्न्यो भर्गदैत्येति नाम च १३.
Jāmadagnya worshipped a barley-sprout form, and the name was 'Bhargadaitya'.
मांधाता शर्करालिंगं नाम बाहुयुगेति च १३.
Māṃdhātā worshipped a sugar-born form, and the name was 'Bāhuyuga'.
साध्या भर्तृमयं लिंगं नाम विश्वपतिः स्मृतम् १३.
The Sādhyas worshipped a husband-born form, and the name remembered was 'Viśvapati'.
तार्क्ष्यं पृथुस्तथा लिंगं सहस्रचरणाभिधम् १३.
Tārkṣya and Pṛthu worshipped a form, called 'Sahasracaraṇa'.
पृथिवी मेरुलिंगं च द्वितनुश्चास्य नाम च १३.
Pṛthivī worshipped a Meru-born form, and the second body was named thus.
ऋषयो ज्ञानलिंगं च चिरस्थानेति नाम च १३.
The sages worshipped a knowledge-born form, and the name was 'Cirasthāna'.
गोरोचनमयं शेषो नाम पशुपतिः स्मृतम् १३.
Śeṣa worshipped a cow-gall-born form, and the name remembered was 'Paśupati'.
तक्षकः कालकूटाख्यं बहुरूपेति नाम च १३.
Takṣaka worshipped a Kālakūṭa-named form, and the name was 'Bahurūpa'.
श्रृंगी विषमयं पद्मो नाम धूर्जटिरेव च १३.
Śṛṅgī worshipped a poison-born form, and the name was 'Padma Dhūrjaṭi'.
पारदं च शिवा देवी नाम त्र्यम्बक एव च १३.
Śivā Devī worshipped a mercury-born form, and the name was 'Tryambaka'.
एवं किं बहुनोक्तेन यद्यत्सत्त्वं विभूतिमत् १३.
So, why speak at length? Whatever being possesses glory—
भस्मनो यदि वृक्षत्वं ज्ञायते नीरसेवनात् १३.
If the nature of ash is known to be that of a tree, it is due to the absence of sap.
धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां यदि प्राप्तौ भवेन्मतिः १३.
If one’s mind is set on attaining righteousness, wealth, pleasure, or liberation—
य इदं शतरुद्रीयं प्रातःप्रातः पठिष्यति १३.
Whoever recites this Śatarudrīya every morning—
नातः परं पुण्यतमं किंचिदस्ति महाफलम् १३.
There is nothing more holy or greatly fruitful than this.
वाचा च यत्कृतं पापं मनसा वाप्युपार्जितम् १३.
Whatever sin is committed by speech or acquired by mind—
रोगार्तो मुच्यते रोगाद्बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात् १३.
One afflicted by disease is freed from illness; one bound is released from bondage.
नाम्नां शतेन यः कुम्भैः पुष्पैस्तावद्भिरीश्वरम् १३.
Whoever worships the Lord with a hundred pots and as many flowers—
लिंगानां शतमेतच्च शतमाराधकास्तथा १३.
And also with a hundred liṅgas, and a hundred worshippers likewise—
विशेषादेषु लिंगेषु यः पठिष्यति पंचसु १३.
Whoever recites it at five special liṅgas—
निशम्यैवं प्रार्थ्यतेऽपि गुप्तक्षेत्रे मुदान्विताः १३.
Hearing thus, even those in hidden places, filled with joy, pray.
ततो बहुतिथे काले प्रत्यक्षीभूय शंकरः १३.
Then, after a long time, Śaṅkara appeared in person.
