केवलं पाठ मात्रेण यश्च संतुष्यते नरः १३.
The man who is satisfied merely by recitation alone,
न च्छंदांसि वृजिनात्तारयंति मायाविनं माययाऽऽवर्तमानम् १३.
The Vedic verses do not rescue the deceiver, who is engaged in illusion, from sin.
स्वार्गाय बद्धकक्षो यः पाठमात्रेण ब्राह्मणः १३.
The Brahmin who is bound for heaven only by recitation alone,
तद्भवान्सर्वथा मह्यमनयं सोढुमर्हसि १३.
Therefore, you must endure this from me in every way.
वृथेदं भाषितं तुभ्यं सर्वलोकेन यत्समम् १३.
This speech has been addressed to you, as it is fitting, by all people.
वाजिवारणलोहानां काष्ठपाषाणवाससाम् १३.
Of horses, elephants, iron, wood, stones, and garments,
अन्ये चेत्प्राकृता लोका बहुपापानि कुर्वते १३.
If other ordinary people commit many sins,
सर्वार्थं निर्मितं शास्त्रं मनोबुद्धी तथैव च १३.
Scripture is created for all purposes, as are mind and intellect.
ततो विधातुः को दोषस्त एव खलु दुर्भगाः १३.
Therefore, what fault lies with the creator? Indeed, those are truly unfortunate.
यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः १३.
Whatever the best person does, others follow that.
तस्मात्सदा महद्भिश्च आत्मार्थं च परार्थतः १३.
Therefore, always, by the great ones, for one's own sake and for the sake of others,
यस्मात्त्वया पीडितोऽहं घोरेण वचसा मुने १३.
Because I have been afflicted by you, O sage, with harsh words,
नकुलोऽसीति मामाह भवांस्तस्मात्कुलाधमः १३.
You said to me, 'You are a mongoose,' therefore you are the disgrace of your lineage.
इति वाचं समाकर्ण्य भाव्यर्थकृतनिश्चयः १३.
Hearing these words, having determined the intended meaning,
दुराचारस्य पापस्य निघृणस्यातिवादिनः १३.
Of the wicked, sinful, merciless, and excessively abusive one,
सोऽथ ज्ञानात्समालोक्य भर्तृयज्ञ इति द्विजः १३.
Then, perceiving through knowledge, the twice-born thought, 'This is the sacrifice for the master.'
तत्र पाशुपतो भूत्वा शिवाराधनतत्परः १३.
There, becoming a follower of Shiva, devoted to the worship of Shiva,
यो हि नित्यं महाकालं श्रद्धया पूजयेत्पुमान् १३.
He who always worships Mahākāla with faith,
यथायथा श्रद्धयासौ तल्लिंगं परिपश्यति १३.
In whatever manner, with whatever faith, one beholds that liṅga—
भर्तृयज्ञस्तु तत्रैव लिंगस्याराधनात्क्रमात् १३.
The sacrifice to the Lord is performed there itself, gradually, through the worship of the liṅga.
बभ्रुं च नकुलं प्राह विमुक्तो दुष्टजन्मतः १३.
Babhru also addressed Nakula, freed from the influence of wicked birth.
तस्माद्व्रजध्वं तत्रैव महीसागरसंगमम् १३.
Therefore, go there, to the very confluence of the earth and the ocean.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा संवर्तो ययावभिमतं द्विजः १३.
Having thus spoken, Saṃvarta, the twice-born, departed as he wished.
ततस्तानाह स ज्ञात्वा गणाञ्ज्ञानेन शांभवान् १३.
Then, knowing them, he addressed the Śaiva hosts through knowledge.
भवन्तोऽभ्यागता यत्र महीसागरसंगमः १३.
You have arrived at the place where the earth and the ocean meet.
अक्षयं जायते सर्वं महीसागर संगमे १३.
At the confluence of earth and ocean, everything becomes inexhaustible.
यदात्र स्तानकं चक्रे देवर्षिर्नारदः पुरा १३.
Here, in ancient times, the divine sage Nārada established a station.
शनैश्चरेण संयुक्ता त्वमावास्या यदा भवेत् १३.
When the new moon coincides with Saturn, O auspicious one—
यदि श्रावणमासस्य शनैश्चरदिने शुभा १३.
If, on the day of Saturn in the month of Śrāvaṇa, O auspicious one—
तस्यामेव तिथौ योगो व्यतीपातो भवेद्यदि १३.
If, on that very lunar day, there is a conjunction or vyatīpāta—
