तास्तेन धर्षिता लुप्तं मदीयं धर्मशासनम् ११.
—all these were violated by him; my ordinance of dharma was destroyed.
जयदत्तेन देवेश प्रतिष्ठानाधिवासिना शशाप मां समानीय वेपमानं कृतांजलिम्॥ ११.
Jayadatta, lord of the gods, dwelling in Pratiṣṭhāna, summoned me as I trembled with joined palms and cursed me.
यस्माद्दुष्टसमाचार धर्षितास्ते पतिव्रताः॥ ११.
"Because, O evil-doer, you violated those chaste wives—"
कामार्तेन मया शप्तस्तस्मात्कूर्मः क्षणाद्भव ११.
"—overcome by desire, I have cursed you; therefore, become a tortoise at once!"
प्राह षष्टितमे कल्पे विशापो भविता गणः ११.
"In the sixtieth kalpa, the curse will be lifted, O Gaṇa."
अहं कूर्मस्तदा जातो दशयोजनविस्तृतः ११.
Then I was born as a tortoise, ten yojanas wide.
पुरस्ताद्यायजूकेन स्मरंस्तच्च बिभेमि ते ११.
Even now, remembering that, I tremble before you, O performer of sacrifices.
चयनानि बहून्यत्र कल्पसूत्रविधानतः ११.
There, many altars were constructed according to the rules of the Kalpasūtra.
भूयः संतापिता यज्ञैः पृथिवी पृथिवीपते ११.
Once again, O king, the earth was tormented by sacrifices.
तस्यां च स्नानमात्रेण सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ११.
And by merely bathing in her, one is freed from all sins.
प्लवमानमिदं राजन्मानसं शतयोजनम् ११.
This Mānasa, O king, is floating and spans a hundred yojanas.
व्यतीता इह चत्वारः शेषे मोक्षस्ततः परम् ११.
Here, four have already passed; what remains is liberation beyond that.
ममाभूदीश्वरस्यैव सतीधर्मद्रुहो नृप ११.
O king, I belonged to the Lord himself, but I transgressed the law of chastity.
मम पृष्ठिश्चिरं भूप त्वया दग्धाग्निनाऽपुरा ११.
O ruler of the earth, long ago, my back was burned by you with fire.
इदं विमानमायातं त्वया कस्मान्निराकृतम् ११.
This celestial chariot has arrived; why have you rejected it?
चतुर्मुखेन तेनाहं स्वर्गान्निर्वासितः स्वयम् ११.
Because of the Four-Faced One, I myself was expelled from heaven.
तस्माद्विवेकवैराग्यमविद्यापापनाशनम् ११.
Therefore, discernment and dispassion destroy ignorance and sin.
तन्मे गृहगतस्याद्य यथातिथ्यकरो भवान् ११.
So now, as I have come to your house, may you act as a host to a guest.
लोमशोनाम दीर्घायुर्मत्तोऽप्यस्ति महामुनिः ११.
There is a great sage named Lomasha, longer-lived even than I.
तस्मादागच्छ गच्छामस्तमेव सहितावयम् ११.
Therefore, let us go together to him.
इत्थं निशम्य नृपतेर्वचनं तदानीं सर्वेऽपि ते षडथ तं मुनिमुख्यमाशु ११.
Thus, hearing the king's words, all six of them at once approached that foremost sage.
अथ ते ददृशुः पार्थ संयमस्थं महामुनिम् १२.
Then, O Partha, they saw the great sage absorbed in self-restraint.
जटास्त्रिषवणस्नानकपिलाः शिरसा तदा १२.
At that time, his matted locks were tawny from bathing thrice daily.
सव्यहस्ते तृणौघं च च्छायार्थे विप्रसत्तमम् १२.
In his left hand, he held a bundle of grass for shade, that best of Brahmins.
अहिंसयन्दुरुक्ताद्यैः प्राणिनो भूमिचारिणः १२.
He did no harm to living beings that move upon the earth, by harsh words or otherwise.
बकभूपद्विजोलूकगृध्रकूर्मा विलोक्य च १२.
And he beheld cranes, earth-dwelling birds, twice-born birds, owls, vultures, and turtles.
स्वागतासनसत्कारेणामुना तेऽति सत्कृताः १२.
By his welcome, seat, and hospitality, you have been greatly honored.
इन्द्रद्युम्नोऽयमवनीपतिः सत्रिजनाग्रणीः १२.
This is Indradyumna, the king of the earth, foremost among those with their wives and followers.
मार्कंडेयादिभिः प्राप्य कीर्त्युद्धारंच सत्तम १२.
Having attained fame and deliverance through Markandeya and others, O excellent one,
भवतानुगृहीतोऽयमिहेच्छति महोदयम् त्वत्सकाशमिहानीतो ब्रूहि साध्वस्य वांछितम्॥ १२.
He has been favored by you and now desires great prosperity; brought here to your presence, speak what is desired by the virtuous.
