परेषामनपेक्ष्यैव कृतप्रतिकृतं हि यः १०.
He who acts without regard for others, doing what is done and reciprocated.
स्वार्थोद्युक्तधियो ये स्युरन्वर्थास्तेप्यसुंधराः १०.
Those whose minds are intent on their own interests are truly insignificant, even if their actions are appropriate.
प्राणिनां परमो लाभः केवलं प्राणिसौहृदम् १०.
The highest gain for living beings is solely mutual goodwill among them.
मित्रावसानिनः पापाः प्रायो नरकमंडनाः १०.
Those who end friendships are sinful, and are mostly the adornments of hell.
मम कीर्तिसमुद्धारः स प्रभावो महात्मनाम् तदाहमपि यास्यामि देवदूतान्यथा न हि॥ १०.
That will be the exaltation of my fame, the power of the great souls; then I too shall depart, just as the divine messengers do.
एते हरगणाः सर्वेशापभ्रष्टाः क्षितिं गताः॥ १०.
All these attendants of Hara, having fallen from grace, have come down to earth.
शापांते हरपार्श्वे तु यास्यंति पृथिवीपते १०.
At the end of their curse, they will return to the side of Hara, O King of the Earth.
न चैषां रोचते स्वर्गो हित्वा देवं महेश्वरम् इंद्रद्युम्न उवाच १०.
Heaven does not appeal to them, for they would have to abandon the great god Maheśvara.
तथा तथा यति ष्यामि भविष्यामि यथा गणः १०.
So too shall I strive, so that I may become one of the attendants.
स्वर्गः सदानुश्रविकस्तस्मादेनं न कामये १०.
Heaven is always spoken of, but for that reason I do not desire it.
पुनः पातो यतः पुंसस्तस्मात्स्वर्गं न कामये १०.
Because a person falls again from there, I do not desire heaven.
चतुर्मुखेन वैलक्ष्यं गतोऽस्मि कथमेमि तम् १०.
I have become embarrassed before the four-faced one; how can I approach him?
अप्राक्षीद्भूपतिः कूर्मं तदायुःकारणं तदा १०.
Then the king asked the tortoise about the cause of that lifespan.
सुहृन्मित्रं गुरुस्त्वं मे येन कीर्तिर्ममोद्धृता॥ १०.
You are my friend, companion, and teacher, by whom my fame has been uplifted.
श्रृणु भूप कथां दिव्यां श्रवणात्पापनाशिनीम् १०.
Hear, O king, this divine tale, which destroys sin by the very act of listening.
श्रृण्वन्निमामपि कथां नृपते मनुष्यः सुश्रद्धया भवति पापविमुक्तदेहः १०.
A man, O king, who listens to this story with true faith, becomes freed from sin in body.
शांडिल्य इति विख्यातः पुराहमभवं द्विजः ११.
In former times, I was a Brahmin known as Śāṇḍilya.
पुरा प्रावृषि पांशूत्थं शिवायतनमुच्छ्रितम् ११.
Long ago, in the rainy season, a temple to Śiva was raised up from the earth.
पंचायतनविन्यासमनोहरतरं नृप ११.
O king, it was most delightful, arranged with the five shrines.
पीतमृत्स्वर्णकलशं ध्वजमालाविभूषितम् ११.
It had a golden pot atop yellow clay, adorned with garlands of banners.
दृढप्रांशुसमुद्भूतसोपानश्रेणिभासुरम् ११.
It shone with a series of firm and lofty steps rising up.
तत्र जागेश्वरं लिंगं गृत्वाथ विनिवेशितम् ११.
There, having taken the liṅga of Jāgeśvara, it was installed.
बकपुष्पैस्तथान्यैश्च केदारोत्थैः समाहृतैः ११.
With bakapuṣpa flowers and others, gathered from the fields,
कूष्मांडैश्चैव वर्णाद्यैरुन्मत्तकुसुमायुतैः ११.
And with gourds and various colored flowers, adorned with wild blossoms,
पूजा विरचिता रम्या शंभोरिति मया नृप ११.
A beautiful worship of Śambhu was performed by me, O King.
शिवस्य पुरतो बाल्याद्गीतं च स्वस्वर्जितम् ११.
Before Śiva, in childhood, I sang a song of my own creation.
ततो मृतोऽहं जातश्च विप्रो जातिस्मरो नृप ११.
Then, having died, I was born as a brāhmaṇa with memory of my past life, O King.
शिवदीक्षामुपागम्यानुगृहीतः शिवागमैः ११.
Receiving initiation into Śiva’s mysteries, I was favored with the Śaiva scriptures.
कल्पकोटिं वसेत्स्वर्गेयः करोति शिवालयम् ११.
Whoever builds a temple for Śiva dwells in heaven for ten million kalpas.
भवंति तावद्वर्षाणि करकः शिवसद्मनि ११.
For as many years as there are drops of water, one remains in Śiva’s abode.
