नाशकं वदनं भद्र तथा दर्शयितुं निजम् ८.
I was not able, O blessed one, to show my own face in that way.
नीत्वा दुर्गतमैकांतेऽकार्षमौद्वाहिकं विधिम् ८.
Having taken her to a very secluded place, I performed the marriage rite.
अनिच्छंतीं तदा बालां बलात्सुरतसेवनम् ८.
Then, though she was a young girl unwilling, I forcibly engaged in sexual union.
निश्वस्य संवृतो विप्रास्तां वीक्ष्योद्वाहितां सुताम् ८.
Sighing, concealed, the Brāhmaṇa, seeing his daughter thus married,
निशाचरस्य धर्मेण यत्त्वयोद्वाहिता सुता ८.
By the conduct of a night-wanderer, you have married my daughter.
इति शप्तः प्रण्म्यैनं पादोपग्रहपूर्वकम् ८.
Thus cursed, I bowed to him, first grasping his feet.
ततोहमब्रवं कस्माददोषं मां भवानिति ८.
Then I said, 'Why does the revered one consider me faultless?'
सोद्वाहिता मया कन्या दानं सकृदिति स्मृतिः ८.
The maiden, once married by me, is given only once—so says the tradition.
सकृत्कन्याः प्रदीयंते त्रीण्येतानि सकृत्सकृत् ८.
Maidens are given only once; these three things are only once, only once.
भवादृशानां साधूनां साधूनां तस्य त्यागो विगर्हितः ८.
For the virtuous like you, the abandonment of her is censured.
उद्वोढा चाधुना नाहमुचितः शापभाजनम् ८.
And now, as her husband, I am not fit to be the object of a curse.
यो दत्त्वा कन्यकां वाचा पश्चाद्धरति दुर्मतिः ८.
He who, having given a maiden by word, later takes her back, is wicked-minded.
तदाकर्ण्य व्यवस्यासौ तथ्यं मद्वचनं हृदा ८.
Hearing that, he firmly accepted my words as true in his heart.
न मे स्यादन्यथा वाणी उलूकस्त्वं भविष्यति ८.
My speech will not be otherwise; you shall become an owl.
यदेंद्रद्युम्नविज्ञाने सहायस्तंव भविष्यसि ८.
You will become his companion in the recognition of Indradyumna.
तद्वाक्यसमकालं च कौशिकत्वमिदं मम ८.
At that very moment, I took on this form of a Kauśika.
बिल्वीदलौरिति पुरा शशिशेखरस्य संपूजनेन मम दीर्घतरं किलायुः ८.
Long ago, by worshipping the moon-crested one with bilva leaves, my lifespan was greatly extended.
इतीदमुक्तमखिलं पूर्वजन्मसमुद्भवम् ९.
Thus, all this concerning the origin of the previous birth has been spoken.
इत्युक्त्वा विरते तस्मिन्पुरूहूतसनामनि ९.
Having said this, when Purūhūta's companion fell silent—
यदर्थं वयमायातास्तन्न सिद्धं महामते ९.
O wise one, the purpose for which we have come has not been accomplished.
इंद्रद्युम्नापरिज्ञाने भद्रकोऽयं मुमूर्षति ९.
This Bhadraka is dying, unable to recognize Indradyumna.
मित्रकार्ये विनिर्वृत्ते म्रियमाणं निरीक्षते ९.
When the friend's task was completed, he looked upon the one who was dying.
तदेतावनुयास्यामि म्रियमाणावहं द्विज ९.
Therefore, I will follow this dying one, O twice-born.
प्रतिज्ञातमनिष्पाद्य मित्रस्याभ्यागतस्य च ९.
A promise made to a friend who has come should not go unfulfilled.
तस्माद्वह्निं प्रवेक्ष्यामि सार्धमाभ्यामसंशयम् ९.
Therefore, I shall enter the fire together with him, without doubt.
इत्युक्तवत्युलूकोऽसौ नाडीजंघे सगद्गदम् ९.
Having spoken thus, the owl, his legs trembling, said with a faltering voice—
मयि जीवति मित्रे मे भवान्मरणमेति च ९.
While I, his friend, am alive, how can you go to death?
अस्त्युपायो महानत्र गन्धमादनपर्वते ९.
There is a great means for this on Mount Gandhamādana.
स विज्ञास्यति वोऽभीष्टमिंद्रद्युम्नं महीपतिम् ९.
He will reveal to you your desired Indradyumna, the king.
मार्कंडेयो बकश्चैव प्रययुर्गंधमादनम् ९.
Markandeya and the crane then went to Gandhamādana.
