वसिष्ठकुलसंभूतः पुराहमभवं द्विजः ८.
Long ago, I was born as a Brahmin in the lineage of Vasiṣṭha.
धर्मश्रवणनिष्ठस्य साधूनां संसदि स्वयम् ८.
In the assembly of virtuous people devoted to hearing about dharma, I myself was present.
न मालती न मंदारः शतपत्रं न मल्लिका ८.
Neither mālatī nor mandāra, nor lotus nor jasmine—
अखंडबिल्वपत्रेण एकेन शिवमूर्धनि ८.
With a single unbroken bilva leaf, I placed it upon Shiva's head.
अखंडितैर्बिल्वपत्रैः श्रद्धया स्वयमाहृतैः ८.
With unbroken bilva leaves, gathered by myself with faith—
सच्छास्त्रेभ्य इति श्रुत्वा पूजयाम्यहमीश्वरम् ८.
Having heard from true scriptures, I worshipped the Lord.
ततो वर्षशतस्यांते तुतोष शशिशेखरः ८.
At the end of a hundred years, the moon-crested one was pleased.
तुष्टोस्मि तव विप्रेंद्राखंडबिल्वदलार्चनात् ८.
I am pleased with you, O foremost of Brahmins, for your worship with unbroken bilva leaves.
अखंडबिल्वपत्रेण महातुष्टिः प्रजायते ८.
Great satisfaction arises from offering an unbroken bilva leaf.
इत्युक्तोऽहं भगवता शंभुना स्वमनः स्थितम् ८.
Thus addressed by the blessed Śambhu, my mind became firmly settled.
अथ लीलाविलासो मां तथेत्युक्त्वाऽविचारितम् ८.
Then, with playful delight, he said to me, 'So be it,' without hesitation.
कृतकृत्यं तदात्मानमज्ञासिपमहं क्षितौ ८.
At that time, I realized myself as one whose purpose was fulfilled upon the earth.
अवदातत्रिजन्मासवक्षविच्चाक्षरार्थवित् ८.
Pure, possessing knowledge of the meaning of imperishable words, and free from the faults of three births.
अतीव मुदिता पत्युर्मुखं प्रेक्ष्यास्य दर्शनात् ८.
She became exceedingly joyful upon seeing her husband's face.
तस्यां तस्मादभूत्कन्या निर्विशेषा निजारणेः ८.
From her, a daughter was born, undistinguished, from her own womb.
नालं बभूव तां दातुं तनयां गुणशालिनीम् ८.
He was not able to give away that virtuous daughter.
प्रविश्द्यौवनाभोगभावैरतिमनोहरा ८.
Entering the delights of youth, she became exceedingly charming.
क्रीडमाना वयस्याभिर्लावण्यप्रतिमेव सा ८.
Playing with her companions, she was like the very embodiment of beauty.
अनन्याकृतिमन्योऽसौ विधिर्येनेति निर्मिता ८.
She was created by that unique destiny, with a form unlike any other.
प्रापितो लीलयाहत्य बाणैः कुसुमधन्विना ८.
She was brought, through sport, and struck by the arrows of the flower-armed god.
प्राहेति भृगुवंश्यस्य कन्येयं द्विजजन्मनः ८.
It was said, 'This is the daughter of the Bhṛgu lineage, born of a twice-born.'
ततः कुसुमबाणेन शरव्रातैर्भृशं हतः ८.
Then, struck fiercely by the multitude of flower arrows.
स च मां सदृशं ज्ञात्वा शीलेन च कुलेन च ८.
He recognized me as equal in character and lineage.
ततः सा तनया तस्य भार्गवस्या श्रृणोदिति ८.
Then that daughter heard of Bhārgava as her father.
रोरूयमाणा जननीमाह पश्य यथा कृतम् ८.
Crying out, she spoke to her mother, 'See what has been done.'
विषमालोड्य पास्यामि प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनम् ८.
Having mixed poison, I will drink it; I will enter the fire.
ततः संबोध्य जननी तां सुतामाह भार्गवम् ८.
Then, having awakened her daughter, the mother spoke to Bhārgava.
स वल्लभावचः श्रुत्वा धर्मशास्त्राण्यवेक्ष्य च ८.
He, having heard his beloved's words and having considered the scriptures of law,
अर्वाक्छिलाक्रमणतो निष्ठा स्यात्सप्तमे पदे ८.
From the act of stepping on the stone, the finality is established at the seventh step.
श्वोभाविनि विवाहे तु तच्च सर्वं मया श्रुतम् ८.
As for the marriage to take place tomorrow, I have heard all about it.
