For the body of a brāhmaṇa is not fond of worldly rewards.
His wife, of surpassing beauty, conquered all the world’s women.
Her speech was sweet and indistinct like a swan’s, and her gait was like that of an intoxicated elephant.
She was created by the Creator, with a deep navel, desiring to be seen.
Then, O good one, seeing her, the beloved of Gālava, even wise sages remain wise only so long
As they are not glanced at by the sidelong looks of doe-eyed women.
Thus, I will seize her, though she is protected by the sage's austerity.
She is destined to become my wife, even if death should come to me.
Finding an opportunity, I will take her; this woman is not suitable for him.
Having bowed, I spoke these words, prompted by what was to come.
What is destined must certainly happen, just as men have acted in the past.
I am your disciple, O great sage, the one who should be taught and guided.
I bow to the conscious Brahman, manifest as the sage named Galava.
Revive me, O healer, with the great mantras of instruction.
By the sharp edge of your words, like an axe, let destruction come.
Let it be cut now by the carpenter’s thread, by the axe of knowledge.
Kindled darbha grass, roots, fruits, wood, and water as well—
Thus, in ancient times, I adopted the conduct of a crane, known as 'the crane.'
Then, having become extremely humble, I stayed with that Brahmin and his wife.
But the sage, though knowing his wife was worthy, did not trust her.
Then, on another day, that Brahmin woman became menstruous.
Thinking, 'Now is the opportunity,' I became delighted within.
Then the young woman cried out loudly as I was carrying her away.
This wicked one, with the conduct of a crane, has taken on the cloak of righteousness.
Once, having been your disciple, I became Malimluca, filled with anger and arrogance.
At that very moment, the sage Galava awoke upon hearing those words.
Then, with a strange form, I was immobilized by the sage.
After that, Galava, enraged, approached and addressed me.
Assuming the conduct of a heron, I was deceived by you.
Thus, cursed by the sage for unrighteousness, I became so.
