With gifts of gold, land, and household donations of wealth and the like,
Then, raising his hand, Indra spoke in the assembly of the gods.
We are the lords of the hosts as long as this threefold world exists.
The curse of Brahma, the curse of Rudra, and likewise the curse of Vishnu—
Then, with joy, all those present agreed, saying, 'So be it,' as had been spoken there. Both acts done by the gods were fitting, and thus the deities, pleased, departed for the divine abode.
You have recounted the wondrous greatness of the Earth-Ocean.
O Nārada, I wish to hear that in detail.
I shall narrate the great story of how the river Mahī came to be.
Long ago, there was a king on earth known as Indradyumna.
He was skilled in what was proper, a dwelling place of discernment, and an ocean of virtues.
There was nothing unmarked by the sign of his meritorious deeds.
That king gave gifts to the needy by the thousands.
In his city, the observance of the Ekādaśī vow was performed every morning.
The ground was covered with golden darbha grass, raised two fingers high.
Even the wise could not count all his good deeds.
O best of the Kurus, he reached the abode of Prajāpati in a celestial chariot.
Then, at the end of a hundred kalpas, that king's time was completed.
Indradyumna, go swiftly to the surface of the earth, O best of kings.
O Brāhmaṇa, why do you now send me down to earth from here?
O king, merit alone, kept hidden, does not secure heaven.
Now, your fame is being erased from the surface of the earth.
If, O king, you desire to remain in my abode—
O Brahman, how might my meritorious deeds come to fruition on earth?
O king, time itself is powerful and acts according to its own will.
Even the universes and myself—what reckoning is there for those like you?
Having manifested the fame of the self, return again to heaven.
Thus he saw himself as having come down to the earth.
He then asked about that city and land, and the astonished people said:
"O fortunate one, ask someone who is long-lived whatever you wish to know." Indradyumna spoke.
"In this land of earth-conquering kings, do not tarry long where there is abundance," the people said.
