दाता प्रतिग्रहीता च वचनं हि परस्परम् ६.
The giver and the receiver must speak to each other.
इति चिंतयतो मह्यं शून्यताभूद्धि नारद ६.
Thinking thus, O Narada, emptiness arose in me.
हृतस्वश्चान्यचित्तश्च शून्याह्येते भवंति च ६.
One whose wealth is taken and whose mind is elsewhere—these indeed become empty.
कृतः कोपस्ततस्तुभ्यमेवं हानिरियं मुने ६.
Therefore anger was produced in you; thus, O sage, this loss occurred.
धिङ्मामस्तु च दुर्बुद्धिमविमृश्यार्थकारिणम् ६.
Let me be condemned for my poor judgment, acting without reflection.
सहसा न क्रियां कुर्यात्पदमेतन्महापदाम् ६.
One should not act hastily; this is the path to great misfortune.
सत्यमाह महाबुद्धिश्चिरकारी पुरा हि सः ६.
The one of great wisdom, who acted after long deliberation, truly spoke the truth.
चिरकारि महाप्राज्ञो गौतमस्याभवत्सुतः ६.
The son of Gautama was called 'the one who acts after long deliberation,' possessing great wisdom.
चिरकार्याभिसंपतेश्चिरकारी तथोच्यते ६.
Because of acting after long deliberation, he is thus called 'the one who acts after long deliberation.'
बुद्धिलाघवयुक्तेन जनेनादीर्घदर्शिना ६.
A person lacking foresight, endowed with lightness of intellect—
पित्रोक्तः कुपितेनाथ जहीमां जननीमिति ६.
Then, at his father's angry command, he was told: 'Abandon this mother.'
विमृश्य चिरकारित्वाच्चिं तयामास वै चिरम् ६.
He pondered for a long time, and because it was a matter of great consequence, he delayed for quite a while.
कथं धर्मच्छलेनास्मिन्निमज्जेयमसाधुवत् ६.
How could I, under the guise of righteousness, sink into unrighteousness like this?
अस्वतंत्रं च पुत्रत्वं किं तु मां नात्र पीडयेत् ६.
Though being a son is not independent, yet let it not cause me suffering here.
पितरं चाप्यवज्ञाय कः प्रतिष्ठामवाप्नुयात् ६.
Who, disregarding his father, ever attains a worthy position?
क्षमायोग्यावुभावेतौ नातिवर्तेत वै कथम् ६.
Both patience and forgiveness are proper; how could one ever transgress them?
शीलचारित्रगोत्रस्य धारणार्थं कुलस्य च ६.
For the preservation of virtue, conduct, lineage, and the family itself,
जातकर्मणि यत्प्राह पिता यच्चोपकर्मणि ६.
Whatever the father declares at birth and at the subsequent rites,
शरीरादीनि देयानि पिता त्वेकः प्रयच्चति ६.
The body and all things related are to be given, but only the father bestows them.
पातकान्यपि चूर्यंते पितुर्वचनकारिणः ६.
Even sins are destroyed for those who act according to their father's word.
पितरि प्रीतिमापन्ने सर्वाः प्रीणंति देवताः ६.
When the father is pleased, all the gods are pleased as well.
निष्कृतिः सर्वपापानां पिता यदभिनंदति ६.
The father's approval is the atonement for all sins.
क्लिश्यन्नपि सुतः स्नेहं पिता स्नेहं न मुंचति ६.
Even when suffering, a son holds onto affection; a father never abandons his love.
पिता नाल्पतरं स्थानं चिंतयिष्यामि मातरम् ६.
I will not consider my mother to be of lesser status than my father.
अस्य मे जननी हेतुः पावकस्य यथारणिः ६.
She is the cause of my birth, just as the fire is produced from the arani wood.
मातृलाभे सनाथत्वमनाथत्वं विपर्यये ६.
When the mother is present, one is protected; in her absence, one is unprotected.
श्रिया हीनोऽपि यो गेहे अंबेति प्रतिपद्यते ६.
Even one deprived of wealth, if he finds his mother at home, attains contentment.
अपि वर्षशतस्यांते स द्विहायनवच्चरेत् ६.
Even at the end of a hundred years, he should behave as if he were only two years old.
रक्षयेच्च सुतं माता नान्यः पोष्यविधानतः ६.
A mother alone protects her child; no one else does so by the duty of nurturing.
तदा शुन्यं जगत्तस्य यदा मात्रा वियुज्यते ६.
The world becomes empty for him when he is separated from his mother.
