विप्रैरुत्थाय संपृष्टः कस्त्वं विप्र क्व चागतः ६.
A Brāhmaṇa rose and asked, 'Who are you, Brāhmaṇa, and from where have you come?'
मुनिः कपिलनामाहं नारदाय निवेद्यताम् ६.
He replied, 'I am the sage named Kapila; let this be made known to Nārada.'
धन्योहं यदिहायातः कपिल त्वं महामुने ६.
'I am blessed that you have come here, O great sage Kapila.'
ब्रह्मपुत्र त्वया देयं यदि मे त्वं श्रृणुष्व तत् ६.
'O son of Brahmā, if you are to grant me something, listen to this from me.'
भूमिदानं करिष्यामि कलापग्रामवासिनाम् ६.
'I shall give land to the residents of Kalāpa village.'
ततो मया प्रतिज्ञातमेवमस्तु महामुने ६.
Then I made this vow: 'So be it, O great sage.'
श्राद्धे वा प्राप्तकाले वा ह्यतिथिर्विमुखीभवेत् ६.
If, at a śrāddha or at the proper time, a guest is neglected,
स गच्छेद्रौरवाँल्लोकान्योऽतिथिं नाभिपूजयेत् ६.
He who does not honor a guest will go to the worlds of Raurava.
दानैर्यज्ञैस्त तस्तस्मिन्भोजितः कपिलो मुनिः ६.
There, Kapila the sage was honored with gifts and sacrifices.
पादप्रक्षालनार्थाय सिद्धदेवसमागमे ६.
For the purpose of washing the feet, at the gathering of perfected gods,
ततो हासो महाञ्जज्ञे सिद्धाप्सरः सुपर्वणाम् ६.
Then a great laughter arose among the Siddhas and Apsarases of auspicious limbs.
ततो ममापि मनसि शोकवेगो महानभूत् ६.
Then, even in my mind, a great surge of sorrow arose.
सर्वेष्वपि च कार्येषु हेतिशब्दो विगर्हितः ६.
In all undertakings, the word 'weapon' is considered reprehensible.
ततोहमब्रंवं विप्रान्यूयं मूर्खा भविष्यथ ६.
Then I said to the Brahmins: 'You will become fools.'
एवमुक्ते प्रहस्यैव हारीतः प्राब्रवीदिदम् ६.
When this was spoken, Harita laughed and said this:
कः शापो दीयते तुभ्यं शापोयमयमेव ते ६.
What curse is given to you? This itself is your curse.
तथाविधस्य भवतो वामपादप्रदानतः॥ ६.
Because of your offering with the left foot, such is your condition.
श्रृणु तत्कारणं धीमञ्छून्यता मे यतो भवेत्॥ ६.
Listen to the reason, O wise one, why emptiness befell me.
इति चिंतयतश्चित्ते हा दुःखोऽयं प्रतिग्रहः ६.
Thinking thus in my mind: 'Alas, this acceptance is painful.'
महादानं हि गृह्णानो ब्राह्मणः स्वं शुभं हि यत् ६.
For when a Brahmin accepts a great gift, whatever is his own merit—
दाता प्रतिग्रहीता च वचनं हि परस्परम् ६.
The giver and the receiver must speak to each other.
इति चिंतयतो मह्यं शून्यताभूद्धि नारद ६.
Thinking thus, O Narada, emptiness arose in me.
हृतस्वश्चान्यचित्तश्च शून्याह्येते भवंति च ६.
One whose wealth is taken and whose mind is elsewhere—these indeed become empty.
कृतः कोपस्ततस्तुभ्यमेवं हानिरियं मुने ६.
Therefore anger was produced in you; thus, O sage, this loss occurred.
धिङ्मामस्तु च दुर्बुद्धिमविमृश्यार्थकारिणम् ६.
Let me be condemned for my poor judgment, acting without reflection.
सहसा न क्रियां कुर्यात्पदमेतन्महापदाम् ६.
One should not act hastily; this is the path to great misfortune.
सत्यमाह महाबुद्धिश्चिरकारी पुरा हि सः ६.
The one of great wisdom, who acted after long deliberation, truly spoke the truth.
चिरकारि महाप्राज्ञो गौतमस्याभवत्सुतः ६.
The son of Gautama was called 'the one who acts after long deliberation,' possessing great wisdom.
चिरकार्याभिसंपतेश्चिरकारी तथोच्यते ६.
Because of acting after long deliberation, he is thus called 'the one who acts after long deliberation.'
बुद्धिलाघवयुक्तेन जनेनादीर्घदर्शिना ६.
A person lacking foresight, endowed with lightness of intellect—
