I too have spoken to you this supreme teaching on the Mothers.
The five elements, and the five organs of action and knowledge—
Prakṛti and Puruṣa, and the twenty-fifth, Sadāśiva.
He who knows this body and this Veda in truth attains Śiva.
For by serving various purposes, it assumes various forms.
Whoever understands the true meaning in the Veda in this way does not go to hell.
The wise declare that such speech is a binding, fanciful tale.
Greed alone is a great snare; from greed, sin arises.
From greed come delusion, deceit, arrogance, and pride toward others.
Taking the wealth of others and violating another's wife—
That greed, along with delusion, must be conquered by one who has mastered himself.
All these arise in those who are greedy and undisciplined.
Those consumed by greed, who sever doubts, fall downward.
They are like razors hidden within, sweet in speech, but like wells covered with grass.
Out of greed, harsh people destroy every path among their own kind.
These, always possessed by greed, should be known as extremely sinful.
By the destruction of greed, others—kings as well—have attained heaven.
Therefore, those seized by this snare are without doubt bound in what is called saṃsāra.
A mother, a brāhmaṇa, and a learned brāhmaṇa—these are foremost.
These eight are mentioned first in the tradition as brāhmaṇas.
When one is born in a family of brāhmaṇas, he is only a brāhmaṇa by birth.
But surpassing mere recitation, one who follows the Veda in conduct and uprightness—
Having studied one branch, together with its auxiliary disciplines, and the six limbs,
One who knows the essence of the Veda and its branches, whose self is pure, free from sin,
Endowed with the virtues of a learned teacher, devoted to sacrifice and recitation,
Who has attained all knowledge, both Vedic and worldly,
Who is of upward-flowing energy, foremost, disciplined in food, without doubt,
Withdrawn, knower of all principles, free from desire and anger,
Thus, those who are exalted by lineage, knowledge, and conduct,
Thus has the nature of such a Brāhmaṇa been described; now listen to the beginnings of the yugas.
