I am not one who, though performing sacrifices with clarified butter poured into the fire, eats the offerings with his mouth turned away.
Whatever harm has been done by me, either through my own actions or by causing distress to the Brahmins—
And you—who are you? You are not ordinary. I bow to you and seek your favor.
I am Narada, O best of kings, who has come here seeking a place.
Although this land and wealth belong to the gods, O king—
He is the incarnation of the Lord, the giver of protection and support; formerly, he was my refuge. Grant me this, for I have come to request it.
If you are Narada, O Brahmin, then let the entire kingdom be yours.
If you are devoted to us, then your wish is our command.
Give me all that has been mentioned—wealth and land, up to the extent of seven cow-leaps.
Then, after addressing Dharmavarman, I said, 'Let the wealth remain with you.'
I was filled with joy as I beheld that excellent mountain.
On which many kinds of trees appear everywhere.
Where the cuckoos and other birds, delighted and satisfied, sing.
Where mortals, having performed austerities, attain whatever they desire.
O Pārtha, I approached a great rock of that mountain.
There, I attained a place that is extremely difficult to obtain.
And I saw those brāhmaṇas whom I considered most worthy of receiving gifts.
They were unable to cross the water, since their boats lacked oars.
Indeed, a brāhmaṇa who does not study is extinguished like fire in grass.
When a gift is given, bypassing a worthy recipient and given to one unworthy—
It is like seed sown on barren ground, or milk poured into a broken vessel.
Likewise, one who gives or receives without proper rite or to an unworthy person—
Land obtained, a cow, enjoyments, gold, and even the body—
These destroy the ignorant; therefore, one should fear accepting gifts.
Therefore, those who practice austerity in secret, who study in secret—
In the proper place, time, and manner, with faith, they offer gifts.
Worthiness is not attained by knowledge alone, nor by austerity alone.
Among these three, knowledge is the foremost and greatest quality.
Therefore, a wise and discerning person should examine each place carefully.
Thinking thus in my mind, I rose from that place.
