उपानच्छत्रपात्रादिदधिमध्वासनानि च॥ ४.
Footwear, umbrella, vessels, curd, honey, seats, and so forth.
दीपकाष्ठोपलादीनि चरमं बहुवार्षिकम् ४.
Lamp, wood, stones, and the like; the last is that which lasts many years.
यद्दत्त्वा तप्यते पश्चादासुरं तद्धृथा मतम् ४.
That which, when given, causes regret afterward is considered demonic and vain.
यच्चाक्रुश्य ददात्यंग दत्त्वा वाक्रोशति द्विजम् ४.
That which is given with anger, O dear one, or after giving, one reproaches the Brahmin—
इति सप्तपदैर्बद्धं दानमाहात्म्य मुत्तमम् ४.
Thus, with these seven verses, the supreme greatness of giving is established.
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म अद्य मे सफलं तपः ४.
Today my birth is fruitful; today my austerity is fruitful.
पठित्वा सकलं जन्म ब्रह्मचारि यथा वृथा ४.
Reciting all the rites of birth as a celibate, if done in vain, is fruitless.
क्लेशेन कृत्वा कूपं वा स च क्षारोदको वृथा ४.
Just as digging a well with great effort, if it yields only salty water, is useless.
एवं मे यद्वृथा नाम जातं तत्सफलं त्वया ४.
In the same way, what was previously in vain for me has now become fruitful through you.
सत्यमाह पुरा विष्णुः कुमारान्विष्णुसद्भनि॥ ४.
Long ago, Vishnu truly spoke these words to the sons in Vishnu’s assembly.
नाहं तथाद्भि यजमानहविर्वितानश्चयोतद्घृतप्लुतमदन्हुतभुङ्मुखेन ४.
I am not one who, though performing sacrifices with clarified butter poured into the fire, eats the offerings with his mouth turned away.
तन्मयाऽशर्मणा वापि यद्विप्रेष्वप्रियं कृतम् ४.
Whatever harm has been done by me, either through my own actions or by causing distress to the Brahmins—
त्वं च कोसि न सामान्यः प्रणम्याहं प्रसादये ४.
And you—who are you? You are not ordinary. I bow to you and seek your favor.
नारदोऽस्मि नृपश्रेष्ठ स्थानकार्थी समागतः ४.
I am Narada, O best of kings, who has come here seeking a place.
यद्यपीयं देवतानां भूमिर्द्रव्यं च पार्थिव ४.
Although this land and wealth belong to the gods, O king—
सहीश्वरस्यावतारो भर्त्ता दाताऽभयस्य सः पूर्व ममालयं देहि देयार्थे प्रार्थनापरः॥ ४.
He is the incarnation of the Lord, the giver of protection and support; formerly, he was my refuge. Grant me this, for I have come to request it.
यदि त्वं नारदो विप्र राज्यमस्त्वखिलं तव ४.
If you are Narada, O Brahmin, then let the entire kingdom be yours.
यद्यस्माकं भवान्भक्तस्तत्ते कार्यं च नो वचः॥ ४.
If you are devoted to us, then your wish is our command.
सर्वं यत्तद्देहि मे द्रव्यमुक्तं भुवं च मे सप्तगव्यूतिमात्राम् ४.
Give me all that has been mentioned—wealth and land, up to the extent of seven cow-leaps.
ऽ ततोऽहं धर्मवर्माणं प्रोच्य तिष्ठेद्धनं त्वयि ५.
Then, after addressing Dharmavarman, I said, 'Let the wealth remain with you.'
आसं प्रमुदितश्चाहं पश्यंस्तं गिरिसत्तमम् ५.
I was filled with joy as I beheld that excellent mountain.
यस्मिन्नानाविधा वृक्षाः प्रकाशंते समंततः ५.
On which many kinds of trees appear everywhere.
मुदिता यत्र संतृप्ता वाशंते कोकिलादयः ५.
Where the cuckoos and other birds, delighted and satisfied, sing.
यत्र तप्त्वा तपो मर्त्या यथेप्सितमवाप्नुयुः ५.
Where mortals, having performed austerities, attain whatever they desire.
तस्याहं च गिरेः पार्थ समासाद्य महाशिलाम् ५.
O Pārtha, I approached a great rock of that mountain.
तावन्मया स्थानमाप्तं यदतीव सुदुर्लभम् ५.
There, I attained a place that is extremely difficult to obtain.
ब्राह्मणाश्च विलोक्य मे ये हि पात्रतमा मताः ५.
And I saw those brāhmaṇas whom I considered most worthy of receiving gifts.
न जलोत्तरणे शक्ता यद्वन्नौः कर्णवर्जिता ५.
They were unable to cross the water, since their boats lacked oars.
ब्राह्मणो ह्यनधीयानस्तृणाग्निरिव शाम्यति ५.
Indeed, a brāhmaṇa who does not study is extinguished like fire in grass.
दानपात्रमतिक्रम्य यदपात्रे प्रदीयते ५.
When a gift is given, bypassing a worthy recipient and given to one unworthy—
