शक्ते परजने दाता स्वजने दुःखजीविनि ४.
He is generous to outsiders, but his own people live in misery.
भृत्यानामुपरोधेन यत्करोत्यौर्ध्वदैहिकम् ४.
Whatever one does for the dead by troubling his servants—
सामान्यं याचितं न्यासमाधिर्दाराश्च दर्शनम् ४.
A common request, a deposit, meditation, wives, and a meeting—
आपत्स्वपि न देयानि नववस्तूनि पंडितैः ४.
Even in distress, the wise should not give away these nine things.
इति ते गदितौ राजन्द्वौ हेतू श्रूयतामतः ४.
Thus, O King, two reasons have been told to you; now hear the rest.
धर्ममर्थं च कामं च व्रीडाहर्षभयानि च ४.
Dharma, wealth, desire, shame, joy, and fear—
पात्रेभ्यो दीयते नित्यमनपेक्ष्य प्रयोजनम् ४.
To the worthy, gifts are always given, without regard for purpose.
धनिनं धनलोभेन लोभयित्वार्थमाहरेत् ४.
One should entice the wealthy with greed and then take wealth from them.
प्रयोजनमपेक्ष्यैव प्रसंगाद्यत्प्रदीयते ४.
Whatever is given, considering a purpose or by occasion—
संसदि व्रीडयाऽऽश्रुत्य आर्थिभ्यः प्रददाति च ४.
In an assembly, out of shame, he gives to the supplicants without being asked.
दृष्ट्वा प्रियाणि श्रुत्वा वा हर्षवद्यत्प्रदीयते ४.
Seeing or hearing pleasant things, whatever is given with joy—
आक्रोशानर्थहिंसानां प्रतीकाराय यद्भवेत् ४.
Whatever is given to counter insult, harm, or injury—
प्रोक्तानि षडधिष्ठानान्यंगान्यपि च षट्च्छ्रुणु ४.
These six are said to be the bases; now hear also the six accessories.
देशकालौ च दानानामंगान्येतानि षड्विदुः ४.
Place and time are known as the six accessories of gifts.
अनिंद्याजीवकर्मा च षड्भिर्दाता प्रशस्यते ४.
A giver who earns blamelessly is praised for these six qualities.
असत्यसंधो निद्रालुर्दातायं तामसोऽधमः ४.
A giver who is untruthful, untrustworthy, and lazy is considered tamasic and base.
विमुक्तो योनिदोषेभ्यो ब्राह्मः पात्रमुच्यते सत्कृतिश्चानसूया च तदा शुद्धिरिति स्मृता॥ ४.
Freed from defects of birth, a Brahmin is called a worthy recipient; respect and absence of envy—this is said to be purity.
अपराबाधमक्लेशं स्वयत्नेनार्जितं धनम् ४.
Wealth that is earned by one’s own effort, without harming others and without hardship—
तेनापि किल धर्मेण उद्दिश्य किल किंचन ४.
He too, it is said, performed some act, apparently in accordance with righteousness.
न्यायेन दुर्लभं द्रव्यं देशे कालेपि वा पुनः ४.
By proper means, wealth that is difficult to obtain may be acquired again in a place or at a time.
षंडगानीति चोक्तानि द्वौ च पाकावतः श्रृणु ४.
The six types of gifts are thus spoken of; and two kinds of cooked offerings—listen.
सद्भ्यो यद्दीयते किंचित्तत्परत्रोपतिष्ठति ४.
Whatever is given to the virtuous, that indeed abides in the highest realm.
द्वौ पाकाविति निर्दिष्टौ प्रकारांश्चतुरः श्रृणु ४.
The two kinds of cooked offerings are specified; listen to the four forms.
वैदिको दानमार्गोऽयं चतुर्धा वर्ण्यते द्विजैः ४.
The Vedic path of giving is described in fourfold manner by the twice-born.
तदाहुस्त्रिकामित्याहुर्दीयते यद्दिनेदिने ४.
They call it 'trikāma'; it is said to be given day by day.
इच्छासंस्थं च यद्दानं काम्यमित्यभिधीयते ४.
That gift which is given according to one's desire is called 'kāmya'.
त्रिधा नौमित्तिकं प्रोक्तं सदा होमविवर्जितम् ४.
The 'naimittika' is declared to be threefold, always apart from oblations.
अष्टोत्तमानि चत्वारि मध्यमानि विधानतः ४.
There are eighty-four superior gifts, and middling ones according to prescription.
गृहप्रासादविद्याभूगोकूपप्राणहाटकम् ४.
House, palace, knowledge, land, cow, well, life, gold—
अन्नारामं च वासांसि हयप्रभृतिवाहनम् ४.
