यामि वा तत्कथं पादौ चलतो मे कथंचन ३.
How can I go there, and how can my feet move at all?
अतोऽहमतिमुह्यामि भृशं शोचामि रोदिमि ३.
Therefore I am greatly bewildered, I grieve intensely, and I weep.
साधुसाध्वित्यथोवाच तं सुभद्रोऽप्यहं तथा ३.
Then Subhadra also said to him, 'Well done, well done,' just as I did.
चिन्तयावश्च मनसि प्रतीकारं मुनेरुभौ ३.
Both of us considered in our minds a remedy for the sage.
परार्थाय भवत्येष पुरुषोऽन्ये पुरीषकाः ३.
This person exists for the sake of others; the rest are but excrement.
मा मुने परिखिद्यस्व देवशर्मन्स्थिरो भव ३.
O sage, do not be disheartened; Devaśarman, remain steadfast.
गमिष्याम्याश्रमं त्वं च नात्रापि परिहास्यते ३.
I will go to the hermitage, and you will not be abandoned here.
एवं ते वदमानस्य आयुरस्तु शतं समाः ३.
As you speak thus, may you live a hundred years.
हर्षस्थाने विषादश्च पुनर्मां बाधते श्रृणु ३.
Listen: even in a place of joy, sorrow again afflicts me.
कथमेतन्महत्कर्म कारयामि मुधावद ३.
How can I accomplish this great deed in vain?
शापितोऽसि मया प्राणैर्यथा वच्मि तथा कुरु ३.
I have cursed you; act as I say, with your very life.
श्राद्धं गंगार्णवे चात्र मत्पितॄणां त्वमाचर चतुर्भागं प्रदास्यामि एवमेवैतदाचर॥ ३.
Perform the śrāddha for my ancestors here at the confluence of the Ganges; I will grant you a fourth part—do exactly so.
यद्येवं तव संतोषस्त्वेवमस्तु मुनीश्वर ३.
If this is your satisfaction, so be it, O lord of sages.
देवशर्मा ततो हृष्टो दत्त्वा पुण्यं त्रिवाचिकम् ३.
Then Devaśarman, delighted, gave the meritorious threefold utterance.
एवंविधो नारदासौ मही सागरसंगमः ३.
Such was that Nārada, and the earth at the meeting of the oceans.
इति श्रुत्वा फाल्गुनाहं हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ३.
Hearing thus, I, Phālguna, spoke with a voice choked with joy.
यूयं वयं गमिष्यामो महीतीरं सुशोभनम् ३.
You and I shall go to the splendid bank of the earth.
मम चैवं वचः श्रुत्वा भृगुः सह मयययौ ३.
And upon hearing my words, Bhrigu departed together with me.
तद्दृष्ट्वा चातिहृष्टोहमासं रोमांचकंचुकः ३.
Seeing that, I became exceedingly joyful, my body thrilled with goosebumps.
त्वत्प्रसादात्करिष्यामि भृगो स्थानमनुत्तमम् ३.
By your grace, Bhrigu, I shall establish the supreme place.
एवं भृगुं चास्मिविसर्जयित्वा कल्लोलकोलाहलकौतुकीतटे ३.
Thus, after sending Bhrigu away, I remained at the shore, full of waves, tumult, and delight.
ततस्त्वहं चिंतयामि कथं स्थानमिदं भवेत् ४.
Then I began to ponder how this place might become established.
यत्त्वहं धर्मवर्णाणं गत्वा याचे ह मेदिनीम् ४.
Indeed, I shall go to the righteous ones and request land from them.
तथा हि मुनिभिः प्रोक्तं द्रव्यं त्रिविधमुत्तमम् ४.
For the sages have declared that there are three kinds of excellent wealth.
श्रुतेः संपादनाच्छिष्यात्प्राप्तं शुक्लं च क्न्ययया ४.
That which is acquired by hearing and by the disciple’s attainment is called pure, and also by women.
शबलं प्रोच्यते सद्भिर्द्यूतचौर्येण साहसैः ४.
The wise call wealth obtained through gambling, theft, and violence mixed.
शुक्लवित्तेन यो धर्मं प्रकुर्याच्छ्रद्धयान्वितः ४.
He who performs righteous acts with pure wealth, endowed with faith,
राजसेन च भावेन वित्तेन शबलेन च ४.
And with royal disposition and with mixed wealth,
तमोवृतस्तु यो दद्यात्कृष्णवित्तेन मानवः ४.
But the man who gives, enveloped in darkness, with impure wealth,
तत्तु याचितद्रव्यं मे राजसं हि स्फुटं भवेत् ४.
That wealth which is begged from others is clearly of the royal kind.
