I have conquered him before, and he was left ashamed, having been overwhelmed by my supreme power.
By me, the great god Maheśa has been made manifest in form—say it is not otherwise.
Indeed, the formless Maheśa has been made with form by me.
I have created this entire universe, moving and unmoving, along with the best of gods.
Having spoken thus, then the goddess Girijā, the all-auspicious one—
Dark-complexioned, slender, with teeth like mountain peaks, lips red as bimba fruit, blessed with a beautiful neck, breasts heavy, Girijā with glossy hair—
Holding in her hand a bow like a lotus stalk, with a quiver of ketaki arrows shining on her back—
Resounding through the three worlds with the great hum of bees—
In that very instant, they became royal swans, as they wished.
There, alone, was established Maheśvara, presiding over Yama.
Then, seeing Shabarī, the great god was bound.
As he was being seized by the hand, Girijā drew near.
Seeing that, at that very moment, the god who dispels delusion—
Was seized by separation and afflicted with longing in his heart.
Freed from confusion, yet overtaken by bewilderment, he beheld Girijā again.
"Listen to my words, slender-waisted one; after hearing, you should act accordingly. Tell me, O noble lady of lovely form, the truth as it is."
"I will seek a husband who is all-knowing and the bestower of all desires."
Thus addressed, Vṛṣabhadhvaja replied to Girijā.
"Consider well, O beautiful-hipped one, for this is the truth, O lovely-faced lady."
"O noble lady, I have earnestly sought you as my wife; do not speak otherwise."
"By whom you were formerly chosen, and indeed through intense austerity."
"You are always difficult to propitiate, even for all living beings."
Hearing Śabarī’s words, Vṛṣadhvaja replied, "If I have been rejected by you, slender one, what more can be said here?"
"Knowing thus, O wide-eyed one, the pitiable loves what is pitiable."
Thus entreated in many ways by the wielder of the trident,
"You are rich in austerity, lord of yogis, detached and pure."
"You, Virūpākṣa, have now been seen directly by me today; therefore, you must not speak what was formerly said to me."
Hearing her words, the destroyer of desire spoke.
Having said this, maddened by love, he took Śabarī by the hand.
"It is not fitting, O Lord, to act thus by force upon an ascetic."
