Indeed, this Shiva—the supreme of the supreme, the highest Self—has been worshipped by you.
When addressed thus as 'Bhringi', she, deeply enraged, spoke.
Ha! Bhringi, because of your partiality, you have spoken these words to me.
Foolish one, I am of the essence of Shiva; Shiva always abides in me.
Then, Parvati and Bhringi heard that auspicious speech.
O son, at the sacrifice of Daksha, you heard the slander of Shiva.
From that very moment, O slender-limbed one, what have you done now? And how, O best of mountains, were you born, O one of excellent complexion?
At this time, you do not have loving devotion to Shiva.
There is nothing superior to Shiva in the three worlds.
You are a devotee, O great goddess, foremost among the most fortunate.
Shiva, the all-lord, is to be chosen; you should not act otherwise.
O Bhringi, either remain silent and steady, or else depart.
By whose austerity, and by whom, indeed, was this Shiva brought here?
Who are you? By what means are you empowered? And why do you speak so much?
Disregarding Bhringi's words, Sati then pronounced a curse.
Having spoken thus, then the goddess Parvati, beloved of Shankara—
Grasping with her hand the slender-limbed one and also the serpent Vasuki—
Enraged, she swiftly seized Shambhu's ornaments.
The two elephants, Kambala and Ashvatara, were adorned by Mahesha.
With only a loincloth as his covering, he gave her alms, laughing at her words spoken in jest.
They all turned their faces away, and Bhringi, the great ascetic, did so as well.
These and many other attendants became distressed.
Shankara, angered, spoke these words to Parvati.
All the sages are making great mockery.
All are intent on ridicule—what have you done today, O auspicious one?
O fair-browed one, if you truly know, then you have defeated me; give me a loincloth here and now, you must not do otherwise.
Thus addressed by Shambhu, the yogin, Sati then—
What use have you for a loincloth, O sage of purified mind?
With the pretext of begging, the wives of the sages were estranged.
There, the loincloth had fallen, and the sages said nothing else.
