Then Maheśa, smiling, spoke these truthful words.
"I am unconquerable by all beings in every way; therefore, O virtuous one, you should not speak otherwise."
Then Ambika said to her husband Mahesha: 'Today I have conquered you; this is no wonder. You are defeated, there is no doubt; you do not understand, O Shankara.'
Thus, Girija laughed charmingly and, looking at Shambhu, spoke playful words, by which she overcame him.
I am unconquerable, O wide-eyed one; of this there is no doubt.
Hearing these words of his, she laughed and replied.
You have been defeated by me alone, indeed, through pure play.
Thus, those two supreme deities, husband and wife, continued to dispute.
O wide-eyed one, listen with attention to that single statement, auspicious for the whole world.
Mahadeva is indeed unconquered, the supreme teacher of the gods.
He alone is the supreme light, and his greatness surpasses even theirs.
How, O Devi, could you conquer him who is unconquerable in the three worlds?
Thus addressed by Narada, Parvati became greatly angry.
Out of impulsiveness, I should not have spoken, O son of Brahma; salutations to you.
O devarshi, why have you spoken so much about Shiva?
By me, he has gained renown; of this there is no doubt.
Hearing such various words, Narada then became silent.
You should not speak so much again, O beautiful one.
O lovely-faced one, you are possessed of womanly nature; you do not know the supreme god, who is highest among the high.
O fortunate one, tell us what was done before by Pinakin; this is remembered—what is it?
Indeed, this Shiva—the supreme of the supreme, the highest Self—has been worshipped by you.
When addressed thus as 'Bhringi', she, deeply enraged, spoke.
Ha! Bhringi, because of your partiality, you have spoken these words to me.
Foolish one, I am of the essence of Shiva; Shiva always abides in me.
Then, Parvati and Bhringi heard that auspicious speech.
O son, at the sacrifice of Daksha, you heard the slander of Shiva.
From that very moment, O slender-limbed one, what have you done now? And how, O best of mountains, were you born, O one of excellent complexion?
At this time, you do not have loving devotion to Shiva.
There is nothing superior to Shiva in the three worlds.
You are a devotee, O great goddess, foremost among the most fortunate.
