पश्वादयः पृथग्भूतास्तथान्ये बहवो ह्यमी ३१.
Cattle and other beings, distinct in their own forms, and likewise many others indeed.
पतिता मृगतृष्णायां मायया च वशीकृताः ३१.
They have fallen into the mirage of illusion and are controlled by Māyā.
परस्परं दूषयंतो मिथ्यावादरताः खलाः॥ ३१.
Wicked ones, delighting in false speech, slander one another.
त्रैगुणा भवसंपन्ना अतत्तवज्ञाश्च रागिणः ३१.
Endowed with the three qualities, bound to worldly existence, ignorant of the true essence, and attached.
परस्परं दूषयंतो ह्यतत्त्वज्ञा बहिर्मुखाः ३१.
Ignorant of the truth, outwardly directed, they slander one another.
गुणातीते च वस्त्वर्थे परमार्थैकदर्शनम्॥ ३१.
But in the reality that transcends the qualities, there is vision of the one supreme truth.
यस्मिन्भेदो ह्यभेदं च यस्मिन्रागो विरागताम् ३१.
In which difference is non-difference, in which attachment becomes dispassion.
न तद्भासयते शब्दः कृतकत्वाद्यथा घटः ३१.
Speech does not reveal that, just as a pot, being artificial, does not reveal itself.
प्रवृत्तिश्च निवृत्तिश्च तथा द्वंद्वानि सर्वशः ३१.
Both activity and cessation, and likewise all dualities.
निरंतरं निर्गुणं ज्ञप्तिमात्रं निरंजनं निर्विकाशं निरीहम् ३१.
Uninterrupted, without qualities, pure awareness, stainless, unmanifest, without desire.
एतज्ज्ञानं ज्ञानविदो वदंति सर्वात्मभावेन निरीक्षयंति ३१.
Those who know knowledge declare this to be knowledge, perceiving with the sense of all-being.
अतीत्य संसारमनादिमूलं मायामयं मायया दुर्विचार्यम् ३१.
Transcending saṃsāra, whose root is beginningless, made of illusion, difficult to discern by illusion.
संसृतिः कल्पनामूलं कल्पना ह्यमृतोपमा ३१.
The cycle of birth and death has imagination as its root; imagination is like nectar.
शुक्त्यां रजतबुद्धिश्च रज्जुबुद्धिर्यर्थोरणे ३१.
The perception of silver in mother-of-pearl, and the perception of a snake in a rope, are due to error.
सिद्धिः स्वच्छंदवर्त्तित्वं पारतंत्र्यं हि वै मृषा ३१.
Success, acting according to one's own will, and dependence on others are indeed false.
एको ह्यात्मा विदित्वाथ निर्ममो निरवग्रहः ३१.
Knowing the one Self, one becomes free from possessiveness and without obstacles.
शशविषाणमेवैतज्त्रानं संसार एव च ३१.
This protection and saṃsāra are like the horns of a hare.
ममतां च निराकृत्य प्राप्तुकामाः परं पदम् ३१.
Having cast off possessiveness, those who wish to attain the supreme state.
यैस्त्यक्तो ममताभावो लोभकोपौ निराकृतौ ३१.
Those by whom the sense of 'mine' has been abandoned, and greed and anger have been cast away,
यावत्कामश्च लोभश्च रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ ३१.
As long as desire and greed, attachment and aversion remain established,
शब्दाच्छब्दः प्रवर्त्तेत निःशब्दं ज्ञानमेव च ३१.
From sound arises sound, and only knowledge proceeds from silence.
अक्षरं ब्रह्मपरमं शब्दो वै ह्यरात्मकः ३१.
The imperishable, supreme Brahman is soundless, while sound is indeed of a non-spiritual nature.
प्रतिपाद्यं हि यत्किंचिच्छब्देनैव विना कथम् ३१.
Whatever is to be explained, how can it be done without words alone?
श्रृणुष्वावहितो भूत्वा परमार्धयुतं वचः ३१.
Listen attentively, becoming focused, to the speech filled with the highest truth.
ज्ञानप्रवादिनः सर्व ऋषयो वीतकल्मषाः ३१.
All the sages who proclaim knowledge are free from impurity.
ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं ज्ञात्वा च परिगीयते ३१.
Knowledge, the object of knowledge, and that which is attained by knowledge—having known, it is praised.
एतत्सर्वं समासेन कथयामि निबोध मे ३१.
I will tell you all this concisely; listen to me.
यथा भ्रमरिकादृष्टा भ्रम्यते च मही यम ३१.
Just as the earth appears to spin when seen from the perspective of a whirling bee,
तस्माद्विमृश्य तेनैव ज्ञातव्यः श्रवणेन च ३१.
Therefore, by reflection and by that alone, it must be known, and also by hearing.
निर्द्धार्य चात्मनात्मानं सुखं बंधात्प्रमुच्यते ३१.
Having discerned the self by the self, one is happily freed from bondage.
