Long ago, Tāraka performed severe and terrible austerities.
By that fierce austerity, he obtained invincibility.
Indeed, all the three worlds have been conquered by this very wicked soul.
Today, O Lord, it is your duty to bring welfare to all; having descended from the celestial chariot, you have now become the foremost among foot-soldiers.
At that time, he ran about on the battlefield, and the son of Shiva, taking the form of a youth, did likewise.
Seeing him approaching, exceedingly fierce, of unmanifest form, and the mightiest among the strong,
I alone, as a hero, will fight together with him; I alone will face all the warriors.
Thus having spoken continually, the mighty one advanced to fight, aiming at the youth.
Today, how has the youth come to stand before me, and before you all?
All the deeds he performed before are well known.
It was by the very son of Kashyapa, of many forms, that the demon was slain.
That slayer of strength, the lord of the gods, has come to kill the youth.
Formerly, O Brahmins, you slew many at Daksha's sacrifice; I will show you, O hero skilled in battle, in the midst of war.
Thus having spoken, at that time, the great-souled, foremost hero among the Daityas, stood alone.
Thus, overwhelmed by supreme anger, the son of Diti was surrounded by the lords of the demons.
As he advanced, roaring, Tāraka, with the vigor of a god—
Struck by that blow of the thunderbolt, Tāraka was bewildered; yet, having fallen, he rose up and struck the elephant with his spear.
He caused Purandara, who was mounted on the elephant, to fall to the ground.
Now hear, O Lord, what Tāraka did right there.
Seeing the lord of the gods slain, Tāraka, the destroyer of enemies—
Then the mighty Vīrabhadra, enraged, raised his trident against Purandara.
Struck by the blow of the trident, he fell to the ground.
He struck Vīrabhadra on the chest with a powerful spear.
The gods, along with their hosts, and the Gandharvas, serpents, and demons,
Then the mighty Vīrabhadra, destroyer of enemies, suddenly rose up, illuminating the quarters with his radiance, resembling the sun, fire, and the moon.
Then, desiring to slay with his trident, the mighty one—
Kārttikeya, of great energy and might, roared loudly.
Then the spirits stationed in the sky cried out, 'Victory!'
There, the battle between Tāraka and the boy was fierce and unbearable.
Both heroes, holding spears, fought each other.
