There, in that battle, the gods became mere spectators at that time.
Thus, with the sound of the ḍamaru drum, the three worlds were filled.
The two, exceedingly enraged and worn down by blows, shone brilliantly.
Then Nārada proclaimed the slaying of Tāraka by Vīrabhadra.
Indeed, what Nārada had spoken concerning the slaying of Tāraka—
Thus, as the two fought, they struck each other.
Thus, at that time, those two fought upon the earth, both being great souls, with the foremost among the wise.
Having heard those words spoken from the mouth of Narada,
I will slay Taraka; witness my valor today. Those sinners, most unrighteous, have entered the battlefield.
You must know that they are fierce; they should never be spoken of.
Having placed death behind them, they entered the field of battle without fear.
Having spoken thus, the mighty Virabhadra addressed the gods.
Today I will make the earth free from Taraka; there is no doubt about this.
Then, taking up the trident, he fought with Taraka.
The matted-haired, bull-bannered hosts struck fiercely.
All bore tridents, all adorned with serpent ornaments.
Blue-throated, ten-armed, five-bladed, three-eyed.
With Virabhadra at their forefront, all displayed the valor of Shiva.
Again and again, at that time, the hosts defeated the demons, who turned away.
Unable to endure, those hosts, skilled in supreme weapons, became victorious.
Then Taraka, bending his bow and eager to fight, entered the army.
Joined by the hosts, Virabhadra, mighty in strength, fought at that time; the foremost of the demons, entering in great rage, began to crush, for he was truly powerful.
Then a battle arose, crowded with gods and demons.
Thus, the bull-bannered ones, roaring, struck the horses with their weapons.
Mounted on bulls and with their chariots, all those asuras were struck down and crushed.
Many were utterly destroyed at that time; some fell dead upon the earth.
Some sought refuge with the attendants and servants of Rudra, for Tāraka, seized by wrath, advanced to slay the hosts of gods.
The demon king Tāraka, indeed, made ten thousand arms appear.
Some bulls were torn apart by a lion with bared fangs.
Thus was this deed accomplished then by the great-souled Tāraka.
