Hearing those charming and auspicious words spoken by that illustrious one,
Then drums resounded and conches were blown by those who had resolved upon action.
There the Asuras roared, having made preparations against the gods.
With many troops they approached Tāraka, the mighty one.
Then all the Pramathas, placing the young Kumāra at their head,
With tridents, spears, nooses, swords, axes, and pattiśas,
Tāraka was struck fiercely by Vīrabhadra with a trident.
And after a moment, Tāraka, the foremost of the Daityas, rose up.
Then the mighty Vīrabhadra hurled a spear at Tāraka.
Thus, as the two fought, they struck each other.
There, in that battle, the gods became mere spectators at that time.
Thus, with the sound of the ḍamaru drum, the three worlds were filled.
The two, exceedingly enraged and worn down by blows, shone brilliantly.
Then Nārada proclaimed the slaying of Tāraka by Vīrabhadra.
Indeed, what Nārada had spoken concerning the slaying of Tāraka—
Thus, as the two fought, they struck each other.
Thus, at that time, those two fought upon the earth, both being great souls, with the foremost among the wise.
Having heard those words spoken from the mouth of Narada,
I will slay Taraka; witness my valor today. Those sinners, most unrighteous, have entered the battlefield.
You must know that they are fierce; they should never be spoken of.
Having placed death behind them, they entered the field of battle without fear.
Having spoken thus, the mighty Virabhadra addressed the gods.
Today I will make the earth free from Taraka; there is no doubt about this.
Then, taking up the trident, he fought with Taraka.
The matted-haired, bull-bannered hosts struck fiercely.
All bore tridents, all adorned with serpent ornaments.
Blue-throated, ten-armed, five-bladed, three-eyed.
With Virabhadra at their forefront, all displayed the valor of Shiva.
Again and again, at that time, the hosts defeated the demons, who turned away.
Unable to endure, those hosts, skilled in supreme weapons, became victorious.
