मेनया सह धर्मात्मा यथास्थानगतस्ततः २७.
With Menā, the righteous one remained in his proper place.
गतेषु तेषु हिमवान्पुत्रैः पौत्रैः प्रपौत्रकैः २७.
When Himalaya's sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons departed,
अथो गिरिजया सार्द्धं महेशो गन्धमादने २७.
Then, together with Girijā, Maheśa dwelled on Gandhamādana.
सुरतेनैव महता तपसा हि समागमे २७.
Through great union and austerity, they came together.
अनिष्टं महदाश्चर्यं प्रलयोपममेव च २७.
Something undesirable and wondrous occurred, resembling a dissolution.
सर्वे ब्रह्मादयो देवाः कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ २७.
All the gods, beginning with Brahmā, were situated in matters of duty and non-duty.
सस्मार चाग्निं ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्चाध्यात्मदायकः २७.
Brahmā remembered Agni, and Viṣṇu, the giver of spiritual knowledge.
ताभ्यां संप्रेषितोऽपश्यद्रुचिरं शिवमांदिरम् २७.
Sent by them, he saw the beautiful abode of Śiva.
अग्निर्ह्रस्वस्तदा भूत्वा काश्मीरसदृशच्छविः २७.
Agni then became small, with a complexion like Kashmir.
अनेकरत्नसंवीतं प्रासादैश्च स्वलं कृतम् २७.
Adorned with many jewels and splendidly built with palaces.
पाणिपात्रस्य मे ह्यम्ब भिक्षां देह्यवरोधतः २७.
Mother, give me alms in the palm of your hand, for I am at your door.
यावद्दातुं च सारेभे भिक्षां तस्मै ततः स्वयम् २७.
As she was about to give alms to him, she herself took it up.
रुद्रस्त्रिशूलमुद्यम्य भैरवो ह्यऽभवत्तदा भिक्षां तस्मै ददौ वाचा अग्नये जातवेदसे॥ २७.
Rudra, raising his trident, became Bhairava; he gave alms to Agni, called Jātavedas, with words.
पाणौ भिक्षां गृहीत्वाथ प्रत्यक्षं तेन चाग्निना २७.
Having received alms in his hand, Agni became manifest before them.
रे भिक्षो भविता शापात्सर्वभक्षो ममाशु वै २७.
O mendicant, by my curse, you shall immediately become one who eats everything.
इत्युक्तो भक्षयित्वाग्नी रेत ईशस्य हव्यवाट् २७.
Thus addressed, the fire, who consumes offerings, ate the seed of the Lord.
आगत्याकथयत्सर्वं तद्रेतोभक्षणादिकम् २७.
Having come, he reported everything about the eating of that seed.
अग्नेर्यथा हविश्चैव सर्वेषामुपतिष्ठति २७.
Just as the oblation is presented to Agni, so it is for all.
सगर्भाह्यभवन्सर्वे चिंतया चप्रपीडिताः २७.
All became pregnant and were greatly afflicted with anxiety.
त्वं त्राता सर्वदेवानां लोकानां प्रभुरेव च २७.
You are the protector of all the gods and indeed the Lord of the worlds.
वयं सर्वे मर्तुकामा रेतसानेन पीडिताः २७.
We are all tormented by this seed and wish to die.
शरणं शंकरं याताः परित्रातुं कृतोद्वहाः सुखिनः स्याम सर्वे निर्भयाश्च त्रिविष्टपे॥ २७.
We have sought refuge in Śaṅkara, to be delivered; may we all be happy and fearless in heaven.
एवं विष्टभ्यमानानां सर्वेषां भयमागतम् २७.
Thus, as all were being afflicted, fear arose among them.
त्रिवर्गो हि यथा पुंसां कृतो हि सुपरिष्कृतः २७.
For the threefold aim of life, when properly established in people, is indeed well accomplished.
तस्मात्तद्वै बलं मत्वा सर्वेषामपि देहिनाम् २७.
Therefore, considering that strength belongs to all embodied beings,
तथा निशम्य देवानां परेशः परिदेवनम् २७.
Thus, having heard the lamentation of the gods, the Supreme Lord—
स्तूयतां वै महादेवो महेशः कार्यगौरवात्॥ २७.
Let Mahādeva, the great Lord, be praised, due to the gravity of the matter.
तथेति गत्वा ते सर्वे देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः २७.
So saying, all the gods, led by Viṣṇu, went there.
ॐनमो भर्गाय देवाय नीलकंठाय मीढुषे २७.
"Om, obeisance to Bharga, the god, the blue-throated, the gracious one."
त्रिस्वराय त्रिमात्राय त्रिवेदाय त्रिमूर्त्तये २७.
"To the one of three tones, three measures, knower of the three Vedas, of three forms."
