सुकृतं चोर्जितं तन्वि सत्यमेवोदितं सति २२.
Good deeds and accumulated merit, O slender one, truly spoken, indeed,
हिंसेर्ष्या च प्रपंचश्च तेन सर्वं विनश्यति २२.
Are destroyed by violence, jealousy, and deceit; thus, all is ruined by these.
यदीश्वरो हृदि मध्ये विभाव्यो मनीषिभिः सर्वदा ज्ञप्तिमात्रः २२.
If the Lord is to be realized always in the heart’s center by the wise, as pure consciousness,
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य शंभोस्तदाब्रवीद्विजया तं च सर्वम् २२.
Hearing these words of Śambhu, Vijayā then spoke all this.
एवं विवदमानं तं बटुरूपं सदाशिवम् २२.
Thus, as he was disputing, that ascetic form of Sadāśiva,
तिरोधानं गतः सद्यो महेशो गिरिजां प्रति २२.
At once, Maheśa vanished from Girijā’s sight.
प्रादुर्बभूव सहसा निजरूपधरस्तदा २२.
Then suddenly he appeared, assuming his own true form.
तदा हृदिस्थो देवेशो बहिर्दृष्टिचरोभवत् अपश्यद्देवदेवेशं सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम्॥ २२.
At that time, the Lord of gods, abiding in the heart, became visible to the outward eye; she beheld the Lord of all gods, the great Lord of all worlds.
द्विभुजं चैकवक्त्रं कृत्तिवाससमद्भुतम् २२.
He had two arms, one face, and was wondrous, clad in a tiger skin.
कर्णस्थौ हि महानागौ कंबलाश्वतरौ तदा २२.
At that time, great serpents, Kambala and Aśvatara, were at his ears.
वलयानि महार्हाणि तदा सर्पमयानि च २२.
He wore precious bracelets, and also ornaments made of serpents.
एवंभूतस्तदा शंभुः पार्वतीं प्रति चाग्रतः २२.
Thus manifested, Śambhu stood before Pārvatī.
व्रीडया परया युक्ता साध्वी प्रोवाच शंकरम् २२.
Endowed with the highest modesty, the virtuous one spoke to Śaṃkara.
दक्षयज्ञविनाशं च यदर्थं कृतवान्प्रभो २२.
O Lord, the destruction of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, for which you acted,
देवानां देवदेवेश तारकस्य वधं प्रति २२.
And, O Lord of gods, the slaying of Tāraka for the sake of the gods,
तस्मात्त्वया हि कर्तव्यं मम वाक्यं महेश्वर २२.
Therefore, O Maheśvara, you must do as I say.
याचस्व मां महादेव ऋषिभिः परिवारितः २२.
Request from me, O Mahadeva, surrounded by the sages.
दक्षकन्या पुराहं वै पित्रा दत्ता यदा तव ७२२.
Long ago, I was given to you by my father as Daksha's daughter.
न ग्रहाः पूजितास्तेन दक्षेण च महात्मना २२.
The planets were not worshipped by that great-souled Daksha.
तस्माद्यथोक्तविधिना कर्तुमर्हसि सुव्रत २२.
Therefore, O steadfast one, you should perform the rites as prescribed.
तदोवाच महाबाहो गिरिजां प्रहसन्निव जातं त्वया मोहितं च त्रिगुणैः परिवेष्टितम्॥ २२.
Then the mighty-armed one spoke to Girija, smiling: 'What has arisen through you is deluded and enveloped by the three qualities.'
अहंकारात्समुत्पन्नं महत्तत्त्वं च पार्वति २२.
From ego arises the great principle, O Parvati.
नभसो वायुरुत्पन्नो वायोरग्निरजायत २२.
From space, wind is produced; from wind, fire is born.
मह्यादिकानि स्थास्नूनि चराणि च वरानने २२.
From me come all stationary and moving beings, O beautiful-faced one.
एकोऽनेकत्वमापन्नो निर्गुणो हि गुणावृतः स्वतंत्रः परतंत्रश्च त्वया देवि महत्कृतम्॥ २२.
The one becomes many, being without qualities yet covered by qualities; independent and dependent, O goddess, this is accomplished by you.
मायामयं कृतमिदं च जगत्समग्रं सर्वात्मना अवधृतं परया च बुद्ध्या २२.
This entire world is made of illusion, comprehended by the all-pervading Self and by supreme intellect.
के ग्रहाः के उडुगणाः के बाध्यंते त्वया कृताः २२.
Which are the planets, which are the stars, which are the obstacles created by you?
गुणकार्यप्रसंगेन आवां प्रादुर्भवः कृतः २२.
Through the connection of actions arising from qualities, our manifestation has occurred.
व्यापारदक्षा सततमहं चैव सुमध्यमे २२.
I am always skillful in action, O slender-waisted one.
देहीति वचनात्सद्यः पुरुषो याति लाघवम् २२.
At the command 'take a body,' a person immediately becomes light.
