At that time, Śaṃbhu was difficult to attain for beings desiring to return home.
Then, the mighty Himavat spoke to his daughter: 'He cannot be obtained by you; therefore, return to your own home.'
With her throat filled with tears, she spoke to her daughter.
Then, smiling, Pārvatī spoke to her mother.
Here itself, I will bring him and choose the wise one.
Girijā, wise in mind, abandoned comfort and beauty.
Jayā, Vijayā, Mādhavī, and Sulocanā,
Pramlocā, Subhagā, Śyāmā, Citrāṅgī, Cāruṇī, Svadhā, and Devagarbhā, the radiant one, all served her.
With intense and fierce austerity, the beautiful-smiling one, having made an altar there, stood firmly upon it.
The young girl abandoned water as food and subsisted on leaves.
And when even the dry leaves were consumed by her,
She lived sustained by air alone, after giving up water; then, standing on one toe, she supported her own body.
Thus, with fierce austerity, Satī worshipped Śaṃkara.
Relying on the highest state, she who is the source of auspiciousness and inauspiciousness for the world,
In this way, she performed austerity for thousands of divine years.
With his wife and daughter present, he spoke to the supremely virtuous one.
"Where is Rudra to be seen, child? He is detached, there is no doubt about this."
"There is no doubt he will not come; truly, I tell you this."
"What use is Rudra to you, O sinless one, when those who were burned before by him?"
"Just as the moon in the sky cannot be grasped,"
Thus Menā also spoke, and so did the mountain Sahya, to Satī.
Thus addressed by them, slender Pārvatī remained steadfast in her austerity.
"Father, you said this before; mother, have you forgotten?"
"That great god is detached, by whom Kāmadeva was indeed destroyed."
"All of you should go; there is no need for further discussion here."
"I will bring him here by austerity alone."
"Know this, O greatly fortunate ones; truly, truly I speak."
Having spoken thus to her mother and to Himālaya, and likewise to Menā, she remained; then the mountains departed by the path they had come, observing her.
When all of them had departed, she remained surrounded by her companions.
Through that great austerity, the entire world, both moving and unmoving, was scorched.
