Thus rebuked by Rati, Nārada, the foremost sage, was—
He reported to the king of the Daityas that Madana had been burned.
Bring her, O greatly fortunate one; make her your wife, O mighty one. Among them, Rati, beautiful and beloved of Madana, is the most lovely.
Hearing these words of the divine sage, whose mind was pure—
Seeing Rati, wide-eyed and enchanting even Madana—
Come, slender one, enjoy the kingdom and pleasures with me as you wish.
Thus addressed by Śambara, the great-souled one, at that time—
I am a widow, mighty-armed one; you should not speak thus.
Hearing these words, Śambara, overcome by desire—
Reflecting on everything in his mind, and on her invincibility—
You are burned by contact; my words are not otherwise.
You frighten me, proud one, with many terrors.
Thus, as these words were being spoken, she was forcibly taken away at that time.
She was appointed as the chief of the kitchen, and was called Māyāvatī.
Everything concerning Madana's eyes was entrusted to Pārvatī; now, O Sūta, tell what happened next.
Then, having seen Śiva, Madana was burned up by his energy.
At that time, the slender one was considered by her father and mother.
Then, addressed by both parents, Girijā, the virtuous one, spoke these words.
Mother, I will not return home; father, listen to me truly.
Śaṃbhu, the supreme among others, by whom the mighty one was burned.
At that time, Śaṃbhu was difficult to attain for beings desiring to return home.
Then, the mighty Himavat spoke to his daughter: 'He cannot be obtained by you; therefore, return to your own home.'
With her throat filled with tears, she spoke to her daughter.
Then, smiling, Pārvatī spoke to her mother.
Here itself, I will bring him and choose the wise one.
Girijā, wise in mind, abandoned comfort and beauty.
Jayā, Vijayā, Mādhavī, and Sulocanā,
Pramlocā, Subhagā, Śyāmā, Citrāṅgī, Cāruṇī, Svadhā, and Devagarbhā, the radiant one, all served her.
With intense and fierce austerity, the beautiful-smiling one, having made an altar there, stood firmly upon it.
The young girl abandoned water as food and subsisted on leaves.
